Want a good video about knife making. Any recommendations?

If you find a good one let me know. I have purchased a few and they did VERY LITTLE for me. I thought the flat grinding with Harvey Dean would be good but it didn't do a lot. A few tips but nothing great. I wish someone on this site with some amature video skills would make one. Something to show a step by step and explain it as they go. On my hunting forum we have someone who puts out some OUTSTANDING videos on bow maintenance and such. They are more than you could ask for at a give away price. I asked him if he made knives with no luck!

If the Hrvey Dean video didn't help you, well then you need to watch it again:D For bladesmithing, the videos by Bill Moran, Ed Caffrey and Charlie Ochs are all good.

That's your opinion. What can I say. It didn't do much for me. A few good tips but not what I had hoped.

The SR Johnson sub-hilt video is an excellent video. I have learned a whole lot of stuff from that one. He takes you through profiling, grinding, handle construction, finishing...everything basically. The video is high quality, and very clear looking.

Has some annoying, repetitive music that I could do without, but it's good.

The Charlie Ochs video.... I liked it because of the handle/guard construction, and how the Randall styling of the knife is executed. The way he grinds blades is very unorthodox. He's probably the only guy who grinds that way. The sheath making section is a great little bonus.

The Harvey Dean flat grinding video is helpful, but he grinds in a strange way too. One side edge up, the other side edge down, grinding strictly with his right hand. Also has some crazy music playing the whole time. very helpful in showing you how to create and line up the plunge cuts. Also shows you how to avoid the dreaded 2 inch mark.

Forget about the Dean D guard video unless you're wanting to make a D guard. He'll not guide you in doing any other steps, he'll just tell you to buy the other video if you want to see those other steps. I didn't like the D guard video all that much.

The Steve Johnson video mentioned above is the hands-down best video I've seen for overall knife making. He takes you through pretty much all of the steps of making a knife in his style and goes over everything well. The music didn't bother me.

The problem with the DVDs and videos is they show you the basics which is good to learn. Where they fall short is they leave the viewer high and dry when it comes to the final finish and heat treating.

A buddy of mine rented the art of hollow grinding by I don't know the maker. But 90 minutes of grinding four blades and then it was over. No how to obtain various finishes, etc. Just grinding 4 knives one right after the other.

Hi Jim - I wanted to mention that Steve's video goes into finishing and he sends his blades out for heat treating. If you work in his style, you can go from start to finish with the video, in my opinion.

I like "The Wire Damascus Hunting Knife" by Wayne Goddard. Covers, forge welding, various tools, forging, heat treating, grinding, etc. Very good if you are interested in forging.

I agree that the Steve Johnson video is very in depth for making that type of knife, if that is the sort of knife you are interested in making it is a must buy.

Bill Moran ground the same way quite a bit. I can't do that either. But you notice that Charlie has that 9 inch disc to flatten out the ripples.

Kim Breed, Gary Wheeler and Dan Prentice put out a variety of videos and "All About Grinding" is one of the best. The information is great. The production is adequate. For me, this was perfect since I'm looking for information on knife making - not artistic merit in presentation.

I have a pile of videos that were not worth the money. I do recommend these.

One more vote for Steve Johhson's "How to Build a Sub-hilt Fighter". Absolutely, positively no contest. I go back to it quite a bit...
