I've gotten a couple of quotes from local steel sellers here and they are asking premium prices for the plates. They don't have to be pristine for my plate quenching needs. If any of you have any extra, similar size, larger or could make an offer or suggestion I would appreciate it.

Try eBay

Aluminium is real expensive - even for scrap right now - but eBay is less than metal suppliers.

Just how thick do quench plates of Alumium need to be. Could I make some by stacking and bolting 1/4" plates to the correct thickness.
 
i dont know the answer to that question, but if you need a certain size, rather than bolting 2 together to get a size, i would be able to quote you.
 
The reason I ask is I can get pieces or 1/4" at work from the scrap bin. We almost never use anything thicker in aluminium. I could even weld them togeather. Just how thick and big should they be for knives with aroung 6 in. blades
 
Crguin....I havent a clue what it looks like (45 degree angles??) no prob,...but if ya can describe it better for (lame) me, ill send ya whatever i can find for free just pay shipping, i have thousands and thousands of pounds of aluminum and mild steel getting tossed everyday, straight,flat, angle, rod, thin thick you name it.
