hello everyone,

I am looking to buy a great first blade for myself, for all purpose use around the house, camping, for fun etc. I am looking for a blade that keeps it's edge, is moderately priced (willing to pay around $50ish, but could spend more or less), and is durable. Durability and solid construction is most important to me. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

For around 50$, my pick would be the benchmade griptilian.

There are a lot of different styles, check those out.

Easy, go to the closest Wally World and pick up a Buck 110.

EDC, camping, and use around the house - it will do all of these and then some.

Spyderco Delica or Benchmade Mini-Griptilian. These smaller knives are much "handier" to me, and just as useful as their bigger relatives unless you are going to start batonning tree limbs or something!

Spyderco Delica, Benchmade Mini-Griptilian, and Kershaw Junkyard Dog II are all fantastic choices. Pick the one that appeals to you most.

I would pick the Delica to start with if I had to do it again... it is a classic knife that I carry in my laptop bag most everywhere.

You've got some great choices at that price point. Anything from Spyderco, Benchmade would be great.

I would recomend a BM Monochrome as a starter. It's a pretty inexpensive knife made of quality materials. I like most framelocks because they're slim and pretty easy to carry. After carrying and using this knife, it makes me wonder why Benchmade hasn't gotten into making more higher-end framelocks in their blue line.

Benchmade 710 D2:)

IMHO the ultimate folder.

I agree with you, my 154cm 710 is in my pocket right now and it's the knife that I always go back to, but it's a bit out of his price range.

The Grips are always a good choice. Enough blade styles that you're going to find one that suits your needs and a good price.

The Spyderco Native is also a good knife for around $50, but for a beginner it may be a big tough to sharpen.

And like Ludwig said, there's always the Buck 110. In my opinion the best folding knife ever made. Under $30 for the tough as nails standard version and better blade steels (CPM154, S30V, BG-42, etc) can be had for under $100.

There are lots of great knives out there in your price range. But do yourself a favor and learn to sharpen the knife you buy. The stock answer around here is save $100 and buy a $50 knife and then the Spyderco Sharpmaker, but any good stone will do the trick and last you a lifetime.

I suggest getting both the Spyderco Endura and a Benchmade Griptillian, at least eventually.
The Endura gives you a good first taste of Spyderco ergonomics and style, and the Griptillian gives you an economic example of the Axis lock, which is a great lock and a ton of fun.
Both knives are well worth the asking price, and will still be appreciated after you have dozens of other folders.
The Spyderco Mini-Manix and Benchmade 710 are good next steps.

Spyderco Endura, Delica or Native. Or save a little money and get a Byrd Meadowlark or Cara Cara. Byrds are made by Spyderco and are about 1/2 the price.

wow, there are TOO many nice knives to just pick one...but I gotta agree with these guys...classic knives that are popular around these parts are:

Benchmade griptilian (lots of variations for personal taste)
Benchmade mini-griptilian (lots of variations for personal taste)
Spyderco delica
Spyderco endura
Kershaw Leek (lots of variations for personal taste)
Kershaw scallion (lots of variations for personal taste)
SOG Flash I
SOG flash II
Cold Steel Voyager (a few different sizes and blade options)

Soem cheaper knives that are recommended taking a look at:

Ka-bar Dozier
Boker Trance
Boker Subcom
Opinel's
CRKT knives...most models are cheap enough for average people to own one...even us broke people, lol...

I ALMOST prefer my Byrd meadowlark over my waved Delica, but I think its just the heavier weight that makes it feel more solid. That and the fancy looking stuff on the back of the handle makes it look like a more expensive knife. I also love the G10 handles. For $25 shipped its hard to beat. Both are very sharp out of the box (Byrd might even be a tad sharper). You cant go wrong with either.

Benchmade minigrip would be the best choice. I've had all of these knives, the minigrip is one I keep going back to for beater chores. Get it in a pretty color of handle and it'll even function well in public as it'll look less intimidating. After all, purple knives are way less powerful than black ones.

If you can spare a little more, the Kershaw Avalanche is a pretty big upgrade.
