Want to cut a checkering file lengthwise.

I have a 3/4" wide checkering file. It's too wide to work on curved surfaces. It would be nice instead to cut it lengthwise into 1/4" and 1/2" wide files.
I don't want to grid down most of the file into dust on my grinder.
Is there any waterjets services around available for a reasonable price?

I wonder if you could clamp that edge-up between two pieces of narrower steel and surface grind it?
Betcha could.

Waterjet's the way....

Check the waterjet thread in this forum for Dave from Greatlakes Waterjet.

Hell of a guy.

Alex - I use the file at an angle to get these cuts, I haven't tried it inside a really tight curve or anything, but I've never had a need for a narrower file.

I just get some drillrod and file out whatever kind of tool needed, harden it and go for it.

I've a friend who is a tool & die maker and a custom rifle builder. He narrowed his checkering files by EDM... cut into about thirds... cuts made in the valleys.

I'm thinking of a low tech/low cost approach.

Dremel tool, Foredom handpiece, or similar type, using small abrasive cut off wheels.
(hard stone abrasive, fibreglass imbedded abrasive, or diamond tipped-your choice)

Keep the file cool with a water bath.

Be careful to keep the wheel straight in the slot, or get a lot of practice replaceing shattered wheels.

The kerf of the cut, plus the grinding you will do to straighten out the cut means i would expect to lose a tooth or two of width.
