Want to forge weld.

If a person was going to try and forge weld,what materials would be best to start with.In order to have the best chance of success ,Hand hammering.

For your best bet use similar steels. I assume you're talking about doing Damascus, 1084 and 15n20 are good choices. I'm not going to go into the basics of putting together the billet as it has been written about extensively and the information is easy to find. I would say to keep the billet fairly small if you're doing by hand, and using a spring fuller will make things much easier.
 
1084 and 15N20 are about as simple as it gets. Aldo sells both already cut into the right size strips.
 
I saw the bundle deals he has.Just was not sure if that was a good starting point.Thanks for all the suggestions.

Start with a low layer count until you become confident about the welding process. Trying for more layers early introduces even more variables into the mix and can obscure some of the rreasons why the welds aren't working properly.
 
I tried some forge welding this weekend. I made a chisel from an old file and a RR spike. So low and high carbon steel and you'll need flux. I first started welding some 1/4" 1018 wrapped over itself for practice.
