If you go to google and type in a query in the following form:

site:bladeforums.com basic tool list

or something similar, you'll get pages of responses. Mostly off topic, but if you browse through the pages, you'll find some of the threads that have discussed this topic. Also, the stickies at the top of the forum have great information in them on knife making.

To save some time for you, many people start out with a good set of hand files, a hacksaw, a drill press, sandpaper, and sweat. More advanced tools that will speed up your work include a bandsaw (has to be a metal cutting bandsaw...or some people cut out profiles with angle grinders), a 2x72" grinder (though many start out with the Sears 1x42"), a forge, anvil, tongs, and hammers (if you are wanting to forge, these are musts), and later on, a heat treating oven.

There are other little hand tools that come in handy like reamers, squares, and needle files, just to list a few. Welcome to the boards, and welcome to knife making. It's addictive, but you have to wade through some deep grass to get going. READ all you can, browse these forums daily and print off or save helpful threads. Read as much as you can from the stickies up top (the "newbies...helpful information here" stickie), and maybe buy some books on the craft. A quick google search using the above form will help you find some great book lists as well.
