So I have got in contact with a few places about buying some steel to start my knife making. Well they all want me to purchase a piece to long for what I want for right now.I just don't want to spend all the money and later find out I don;t like it. Now this will probably not happen but I don't want to spend a 100 and not use it. I'm a single person that has crazy bills. LOL! Anyway will anyone sell me a piece about 15 inches 3/16 thick and 4 inches wide. I don't want to be a bother to anyone but I figured I would ask. I have no problem paying for it and the shipping as long as its a reasonable price. Thanks to all that has helped me out so far. I really appreciate it. I was looking for 1080 W-1 or 1095. I would really like a piece of 1095 if possible. Thanks again.

I would like to make a blade thats 7 inches long and with the handle and it it would be about 12 in long. I would like to start out with a bowie knife of some sort.

best advise im going to give you which was given to me by many knife makers is to start small. the bigger the blade the harder it is to keep your bevels the same. i purchased 25' of 1080 in 1/8"x1.5" for $54 plus another $24 for shipping. makes it about $3/foot. i used it to make my first knife and still continue to use it. i havent even used up a whole 5' stick yet. that even includes sending a foot of it to another newbie. i dont know why you want it 4" wide. you would be spending more time cutting it down to the size of your knife than anything. i can sell you some of my steel which will work great for making a first knife. what i have is basically one of the standard widths that knifemakers use. let me know if you want to buy some of my steel and ill email you with how much it will cost including shipping. we can work out the details thru email.

Get a couple of books first. Then get several catalogs from the knife supply companies. They all sell steel by the foot. Buy what you need to start with. If you want to start with a bowie, you might start with a pre-made blade from one of the catalogs, or a kit from www.knifekits.com .

Squee's right, start small on your first knives you make yourself.

You can find 12" and 18" lengths of common blade steels lots of places. Check the sticky at the top of the maker's forum for links/sources.
