want to make my own first knife but have only 2 types of steel

Oil will probably result is less cracked blades and a slightly lower lurning curve for quenching. Have you read the links that I've posted yet? If not think of a question you have and search the links library for one that is relevant.

Sounds like you really want to make a knife in the "survival" mode.....

As well as Goddard's $50 Knife Shop book....get Ron Hood's "Hood's Woods" video on primal knifemaking hosted by Tai Goo and Tim Lively....I think this is exactly what you are looking to do...and the video is worth a million words.....it'll even show you a dirt forge.

I've had this theory that given a hammer and a file.....I could walk along the RR tracks and pick up everything I need to make a knife....never tried it though...I'm too lazy that way.

when y'all say oil, just regular motor oil, like does the viscosity matter, does it matter if it's clean or dirty, i need a ilttle bit more

Try used transmission oil....Also, look at the Neo Tribal web site. There's all the answers you'll need to produce the knife you're discribing...I am just north of Atlanta, not too far, feel free to contact me with any questions and I'll try to walk you through it...Send me a private message and I'll give you a phone # and E-mail. Good luck!!!!

Motor oil, tranny fluid, or Crisco.....heat the oil up a bit by dipping a piece of scrap steel that you heated to red color in the quench tank...ideally you want the oil to be around 140F

It can be clean ,dirty....doesnt matter except dirty oil might be more flammable.

Find a powerful magnet to see if you are ready to quench too.....

but like I suggested in the earlier post....spend the $25 for the video I suggested and you will have more info than you need.....and your head will be swirling with ideas.......as long as I've been doing it....I still love that video

Used oil is dangerous, it's full of lots of things that will try and kill you.

New oil is the way to go unless you're using a cooking oil, then used is okay.

Used oil=BAD
