So for sometime Ive wanted to learn how to make my own knives and get good( I hope) But Im not really sure of all the equipment Ill need to get started?? So thats my question whats all the basic stuff Ill need and idea of what it my cost me. Please just make list of iteams Ill need im looking to give this a try real soon after alot of reading, watching videos, and all around research

A good place to start would be the stickies at the top of the knife makers sub forum.

Well, I'd say all you really need is a drill press and a good 2x72 belt sander. Or, if you're cheap, some nicholson files.

Depends on how you'd like to go about making your knives. You can hand forge them (which is intensely fun!) or you can use the stock removal method. I imagine you'd need different equipment for each. :)

Basic stuff that you may or may not, in my opinion:

Grinder
Drill press
Metal saw
Forge/anvil (if you want to hand forge)

Hope this helps!

Tools that I use for stock removal:

Belt grinder/sander
Bench grinder
Drill press
Metal band saw
Files
Dremel
Sand paper
Vise
Clamps
Hammers, screw drivers, etc.

To get the setup of tools that I listed (not counting the HT process), you would be looking at $5,000+. Raise that figure to $6,500+ if you're going to count the up grade Pheer belt grinder that we will be ordering later this month. However, I have no doubt that for $1,000 you could have a functioning knife shop, if not the highest quality tools.

My suggestion is that before you start working with metal, you need a copy of Machinery's Handbook. This is a fundamental source, as you become familiar with it more will follow.
