I am pondering making one of my 2nd Amendment style knives out of CPM-10V and giving it titanum bolsters that encompass scales of ivory :D. My onley snag is steel cost, a quote from crucible for a chunk that is 1.5" x 3/16" x 18" is around $110. they only have it in 18" length not shorter. i onley need 9" and thought that some one might want the other 9". i'm not selling it just wondering if someone would want to go in halfsees with me if i decide that i dont want to order all 18" for my self.

ya it is but think about the bragging rights that comes with it ;). I am trying to do a higher end clean peace for maybe getting into Knives Annual. but that's just a dream :D. I am going to start a new post with some drawing of it and ask some questions.

Wow thats expensive.
I just bought 2 pieces of S30V for $110 each. 3/16" x 1 3/4" x 36" and precision ground.

the cheapest price i found so far was a local company that had 1.5" round of CPM-10v and they wanted $25 a pound. but good luck forging down that material. Its worth the extra cost to have it in flat stock. and to let you know its only 2 pounds worth of material for the $110 price tag :(. I might just keep it all as I hope i don't need a back up chunk but that would suck if i did and i had to order another 18". With the cost of this material I am going to machine most of it i think with the wire EDM so i can save as much material as possible. and reduce the risk of scraping a $55 chunk of steel in one whack.

I just redid the math and i think the weight crucible gave me is wrong.

3/16" x 1.5" x 18" = 5.0625 cubic inches

crucible states that CPM-10V has a density of 0.268 pounds per cubic inch. which means.

5.0625 x .268 = 1.35675 Pounds.

and at $106 for 1.35675 Pounds means I'm paying $78.13 a pound. that comes to 21.708 Ounce's.
which is $4.88 an Ounce. OUCH  I wish i did not do the math :foot:

last time i ordered it it was 85$ per Lb
BTW grind it to 99% of what you want before heat treat or life will suck

i have no need right now for the other 9 inch or i might go in on it with you

BTW just think of all the steel you will cut and grind a way that's just gone :)
did you see the push dagger i made of 10v \

also might help if you look up A11 same stuff

So butch do you think 3/16" is over kill and that 1/8 would be ok. I was thinking 3/16 as my Standard 2nd Amendment knives are made from 1/4" that i surface grind to about 3/16. I have never worked with this material so i don't really know. The thing is i guess what kind of angle can CPM-10V handle. If i know that then i can figure out how thick i need it to be so i still can get the grind look i like. I did see your push dagger construction pictures but did not see a completed knife.

Wow, I'd almost be crying as i was grinding off metal. Those poor, valuable sparks...

maybe see if they have 5/32? its a nice compromise for that size knife.

Now if you wanted CPM 3V, I know a place that sells it by the inch in 3/16 x 1 1/2 - but thats pretty much the opposite of 10V. Wear resistance similar to M2 and toughnes just WAY up there.

Rob!

i have made veg cleaver of 10v and a parer (at 62 rc ) im thinking they still have not had to sharpen them
other thoughts are that while the edge did not chip out on then they do not see a lot of edge loading and no prying

just thoughts
grinding is not bad before hardening but it can kill a 220 grit belt in about 2 passes when hard i hand sanded the push dagger blade before heat treat that way all i had to do was clean off the decarb layer

I was given a tip on where to find A11 (CPM-10V). So i gave them a call and found out that thy don't have it in the thickness i want but thats ok as i can slab it up with the Wire EDM at work and that onley removes .013 of material to make the cut. so any way i got a quote for .5" thick by 1.5" wide by 9" long and i was shocked. thy want $32 for it, thats 1.809 pounds which is $17.69 a pound which is also $1.10 an ounce :D. So i might buy a larger chunk as that chunk does not meat there minimum perches. that being the cause i might slab it all up and list it here for a steel of a deal:)
