Want to step up my modern flippers!

Years ago a member here sent a Chris Reeve Sebenza to me because, at that time, I mentioned in a post that I’d never be able to afford one. The gentleman sent it free of charge. I promised, that if I was ever in a position to pass along that generosity, I would do so. I’ve had the opportunity to pass along a knife or two since then as my circumstances improved. I consider it an honor.

Edit: Just rec’d your info. I’ll go into town and mail it off tomorrow!

It really does mean a lot to me sir! And I’ll piggy back on that one day. I like the idea. The nicest knife I’ve ever had was Chris Reeve Green Baret. A ex (dating at the time) picked it up second hand and gifted it to me as a present for graduating basic training. I used it on deployment. Was on my assault boarding kit.

Well we broke up, I loved the knife but hated the memory. So it was left at my command when I got out. (Passed it on to my mentee.)

So I know how good it can feel to pass down such a gift.

Often wonder if I should have kept it and grew up mentally over the “she gave it to me”. But then I think about the joy and passion of a younger seaman.

But that’s the past. But as I said. In honor and tradition of your experience I’ll pay it forward as well.

Vintage ZT users is what you need in your life. 0801, 056x, if you like assisted, all the Ken onion models are great. Love my 0055, it was $135 on the exchange and flawless.

Yea. Plan to become a paid member soon. Wife is out of work medically. So I’m working overtime to make it through. But as soon as things balance out, I want to get a membership. And Oh wow! Thank you! That’s amazing!

Email sent sir!
You'll love the link, for the Patriot, the model number is 1776! I have two!

There is nothing more satisfying than giving a junior troop a knife you know they will cherish and remember your lessons and guidance every time they see or use it. I'm planning on giving a newer SSgt in my unit my first automatic, a kershaw launch ( he loves autos), he is a solid dude that I know will take care off business how I would.

Exactly. Kid had it rough growing up. One of those “surprised he enlisted instead of running the streets” cases. Was like a damn sponge. Trying to soak up any lessons he could.

You could see the excitement in his eyes as I handed it to him.

Dropped it off @ post office this morn.….should be delivered Monday. Have a great weekend!

A nicer Kershaw or Civivi is plenty to scratch my itch day to day.

As others have said, getting a good and low-priced flipper made in the US is tough. My domestic purchases are mostly higher end or custom, and mostly fixed blades.

Despite having "nicer" and much more expensive knives, I spend most of my time with a Civivi or Kizer in my pocket. (Definitely check out Kizer.) This "fancy" Civivi was in my pocket today. I definitely recommend it, either in their 9Cr/10Cr Damascus or 14C28N.

... For a budget knife the Sencut Neches in 10Cr15CoMoV and micarta is a really nice, around $50.

The Sencut Neches is a gem. It looks simple but it's just so good at being what it is. The size seems "just right" for a lot of carry environments. The action is good. It is remarkably comfortable in my hand. I love the blade shape and 10Cr15CoMov (Chinese analog of VG-10) is a capable steel. Overall, it's a fantastic value and one of my favorite knives from last year.

At just over $100 the QSP Hawk is outstanding. S35VN, cocobolo scales, ceramic bearings. Action as delivered was very good. Funny how you don't see these on the sell forums ...

Case makes a couple of modern flippers. The Mazzila and the Kinzua. I’m not sure I got those names correct but they are both made in the USA.
Yea. I’ve thought about those. As I’ve said above. Trappers and lock backs are my go to favorites. So essentially Buck and Case. Never gave the modern Cases much thought. I guess subconsciously just kinda dislike them being not what I like with case. But then again. I like several of the non-lockback Bucks. So idk

I have a couple CRKT minimalist that I’ve modified differently. But the QSP Canary always catches my eye

I've had several knives from QSP in recent years, starting with their early stuff on Massdrop. When they hit, they hit. Unfortunately, I've experienced spotty QC and a high rate of immediate returns.

I sometimes notice the former in disassembly and on things that don't really matter but it's enough to make an impression. If this was years ago, stuff like that wouldn't be as big of a deal to me. However, too many Chinese manufacturers seem to run a tighter ship now. From a tinkerer's perspective, I might put QSP on par with TwoSun or Artisan/CJRB. I've heard good things about the knives QSP makes for Finch but my experiences over time make me wary of the gamble.

I figured it could be hit or miss. Kinda why I looked at the small fixed blade. Hopefully less to go wrong 🤣

At the pricy end: Look at the flippers designed by the late Darrel Ralph: Madd Maxx and Axid. There was a licensed clone from Camillus too.

At the user end of the price spectrum: CRKT M-16 (several versions) and their M-21 (also in several versions).

I would save some money or sell a couple of blades to reach the $100-200 range and try something like a ZT450

You can also try a Kershaw leek or a Gerber Fastball but IMO you will get a better experience with the ZT
