I just got an order and it calles for Maple handles. I have done them with leather dye and with only linseed oil. How do you get the inner parts of the maple dark? I have heard of using acids but I dont exactly know the process and would like to learn. Could anyone enlighten me on this subject?

I use chromic acid from RWWilson. Soak it on till your color is acheived, neutralize with tonic water then sock the oil to it.

For northern hard maple, I warm the wood carefully with a heat gun [hair dryer would work], then use 'Old English' scratch cover, the oily liquid stuff. Then finish with linseed or toung oil. Take your time and let the coats dry, steelwool inbetween coats, and you can get almost 'walnut' color. Safer than acid.
