Want to Upgrade My EDC

I tend to believe that Spydercos VG10 holds an edge better than any 154CM i've ever used. If you dont like VG10, dont get 154CM. My vote is to get a D4 with ZDP189.

Thanks Mr. Bauer, leaning towards a Delica ZDP then. Has anyone ever bought one with serrations and ground it back to remove the serrations?

I would leave grinding ZDP189 to a professional. Keep in mind that most people think S30V is hard to sharpen, much less removing serrations and ZDP189 has almost twice the carbon. it would be a major pain in the ass. Just get the PE model.

Thanks Socom, I managed to handle today a Benchmade mini griptilian and a Kershaw composite D2 Leek. I must say the assisted opening is rather startling ,I liked the steel in both knives, the D2 a little more. The griptilian blade dessign is much more utilitarian than the Leek. Perfect would be a griptilian style blade in D2. The mini-grip seems a bit small to me,my Delica fills my hand better.

Socom elite,I've decided I'm gonna get a composite d2 leek. I also want a griptilian,should I go for the D2 or Ritter S30v?

For a couple of bucks over your $100 limit you might want to check out the Spyderco Para Millitary w S30V full flat grind and compression locking system.
Awesome tool.

You should like the leek, it's a great knife and Kershaw knows how to Heat Treat. As with the D2 or Ritter S30V. I would go for the Ritter just because I don't like black coated blades. Or just go for a regular w/154cm a great steel. I got a 555hg (hollow Ground) that cuts like a demon. Did you check out the Spyderco Sage? I handled one in a passaround and they are top notch. Check this out.... Damn good looking knife

+1 to that. The Para Military is very nice. you can get one cheaper. I passed one at a gun and knife show for $60 don't know why. they sell here for around 80 or 90

Is s30v the only blade steel offered in the para?

I have seen the CPM D2 Para for just over $100 on the boards. I have a CPM D2 Millie and really like the steel for it's crisp sharpening and nice edge qualities, and it does hold an edge better that VG-10. I wouldn't say it is leaps and bounds more than VG-10 like ZDP, but there is a bit of a difference. On the composite blade there is a vendor on Blade Forums that is selling the blems (cosmetic, not functional blems) of the composite CPM D2 Leek for only $38 shipped. That would be a real bargain and allow you to get another knife to try out as well.

Edit to add: the same dealer is also selling Blem S60V Blurs for under $60 as well, and between those 2 knives you would definately have a knife with better edge retention than VG-10. A lot of people said they couldn't even find the blems, as they were mostly cosmetic grinding issues.

I've had and currently have knives in both VG-10 and 154cm. I don't think you'll notice much difference between the two in the real world. To get a dramatic improvement in edge holding, you're going to need to look at knives using S90V (Spyderco Military), S110V (Kershaw Shallot), or ZDP-189 (Spyderco and Kershaw, not to mention William Henry and others).

If you like the ergos of your Delica the ZDP version would be a logical choice.

maybe it's just me, but my benchmade, dalton (ATS34), and Microtech's with 154cm is way better then spyderco's vg10. S60V and S90V might be a little brittle for EDC, but they cut great and for a long time. Also the average person will have a hard time sharpening them

Socom Elite,I ended up first buying a Leek w/ composite blade (blem) off Ebay. I like the steel very much, hated the frame lock. I gave it to a friend who is quite happy with it.
I received yesterday a Benchmade 710D2 (plain edge uncoated) from knifeworks. Knife fit is excellent, knife grind not so much. Tried to set bevel with sharpmaker,no luck . Freehanded edge on and it seems like very good steel. This will be my new edc from here on.
I still plan to get a Kershaw Junkyard Dog II with composite blade, and probably a Benchmade Kulgera.

Thanks for all the input! :)

Wouldn't that be a recurve?

I don't think you'd be disappointed with a Ritter Griptillian or a ZDP delica!

I have a Benchmade Griptilian and think that its a great knife. I don't have any Spyderco's But I do know that Benchmades steel is great. Mine will take and hold a shaving sharp edge for a while. I mainly use it for opening and taking down cardboard boxes and basic food prep.
