Like the title says, I need to replace or upgrade the platen on my grizzly 2x72. The one I have is 7 years old and its non-flatness is starting to become a problem. I could get a pretty cheap replacement platen from grizzly, but I'd like to know if there is anything else out there that might be better.

Thanks!

Chris

You can put a glass platen on it. You can find them on Ebay

I second that. I just put a new piece of glass on my platten yesterday. Best thing I ever did was go glass on my platten. Rinse cooler and lasts twice as long.

A glass platen is definitely on my radar, but they kind of scare me. Something about a 10" piece of glass dislodging and exploding at aorta-level when it hits my contact wheel...

But I may have to get over it and get one.

For one thing, Hesparus, the glass platens are tempered Pyrex- my understanding is that they wouldn't produce the kind of shards you're picturing.
For another, most people use JB Weld to glue them to the metal platen, so the likelihood of the whole thing detaching is very remote. Mine just doesn't get hot, even though I do most of my profiling on the tool rest of my venerable Grizz. If you're used to a metal platen, you may have to actually use a glass one to understand what a huge difference it makes.

So I bought a new platen from grizzly, and when I get my next paycheck I'll get a glass platen to put on my old one.
Thanks for the recommendations.

Chris
