Hi guys.

I am a primarily fixed blade user. I started knife collecting early this year but I have not really used them too extensively. That being said, Im afraid of getting in trouble using these knives, especially where Im from, where they are looked down on. Im desperate, I want to beat these knives to death, but I dont know where I can take them legally and bang on them!!!!

Are there any recommendations on certain wildlife parks in new york where I can go and do my business without trouble? PLease help!!!

edit: I use fixed blades from 4inch to 11inch blades

Hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting present plenty of opportunities.

Spend some time in the Catskills or Adirondacks. Long Island is a different world than upstate. No one even blinks at any knife or tool I carry.

I live in NYC, and from my home the closest real park is Harrimon State park. If You want to try out your fixed blades head out there. A great trail is the red trail heading towards Pine Meadow Lake. The start of the trail is on 7 lakes drive, pick up a trail map from an REI or EMS head out for a day hike, check out the beutiful lake and scenery, then walk off trail for a bit and try your hand at some Bushcraft.

Enjoy, Harrimon has so many great trails, you really must check it out.

Well, I live upstate and recommend you find state land as opposed to state parks to hack at. Other than dead and down wood, it's illegal to hack up anything on public land to begin with. Since state parks are frequented mostly by folks engaged in family outing type activities, and state lands are usually used by hunters, fisherman, and wood cutters, I'd recommend the later. I've worked for both NYS Parks & Rec., and the DEC in the past...trust me, state land is much lower profile.

Get you some pieces of firewood. Spread out some newspaper in a room in your abode and go to town.

Yeah, at home you can whittle. Make a spoon, that takes some effort, and gives your knives a chance to cut.

That's one problem with modern society. There's very little real use for large fixed blade knives. We've left the old west far behind, there's no wild injuns on the warpath coming over the hill, and we're not Navy Seal. Camping in wilderness areas are about the only place you need a large knife, so you will get a hairy eyeball at the least using them in public. The state land idea seems like a good one. Stay out of sight with them, and you should be okay. But if you get caught chopping away in a state park, you will probably be arrested. They take very dim view of people chopping at random on the vegetation.

Backpacking magazine, offered through backpacker.com has a sort of "Trail Finder" tool that helps you find backpacking trails in your area. I find that that helps a lot.

As others said, hiking/camping. If it wasn't for that I would literally have 0 use for a fixed blade except for collecting.

I'm on Long Island too, and go camping a few times a year. I do have a back yard with lots of wood so if the need to hack something arises, there's always that.

hey man. I been there before, under bear mountain. Nice place, but I dont feel comfortable using the knives there because a lotta ppl go there. I have to check out this state land stuff. I always thought "state land" was the same as state parks

In New York, state land is administered by the DEC...state parks by NYS Parks, Recreation and Historical Preservation. They are 2 separate state departments.

Do you not cook? I've used lots of my fixed blades in the kitchen. My designated pizza knife used to be a Cold Steel Saex Machete. My "Chefs" knife was a KaBar BK-5. I have even used my Trail Master for vegetable prep.

If you don't live in the country, then you should be able to find homeless people. Keep the tradition of the samurai alive by testing your blades on the peasants! I'm kidding, I'm kidding.

backyard, front yard, side yard, whatever yard if you got any? if not head to grandma's place or mom and dads or uncle bills or aunt esters or friends house. or go make friends with some one who has lots of land.....:)

if you use a state or federal park make sure you read up on the rules, and go deep inside where no tourists, day hikers, rangers might pop out on you and think you're a killer on the loose and call in the swat team or military on you.

I feel sorry for y'all up there in new York, I don't mean to be ugly but that place sounds like a living hell. Glad I was born, raised and live in the deep south.
