I have been contemplating replacing my 20 year old Craftsman 5" bench vise--It has been/is a great vise, just looking to the increased versatility of a vise that is more adjustable, I have kind of narrowed it down to 3 vises which are in my price range, unfortunately they are all made in China--the American made options are just too damn much $$$, the 3 I've got it narrowed down to, are the Palmgren: https://www.dgisupply.com/store/pitem.aspx?SKU=PAL29503&DepartmentId=1091272&Vendor= or the Yost: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Yost-5-i...86343?storeId=10051&langId=-1&catalogId=10053 or the Wilton import: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200334217_200334217

Like to get ya'lls input on which one you would go with.
Thanks--Don

I'm glad you posted this. I was looking at the same vise but the 79$ version. Since you said they were both made in China I figured they were pretty much the same but at least the Yost has a stated clamp strength of 9000lbs. Versus the 300lbs the 79$ version has. That combined with the fact that the Yost has the deepest throat at 4", which can come in real handy with knives, I'm throwing my vote in for the Yost. In fact I'm going to buy that model myself now that I've read all the specs. Thank :D

I have the Wilton import and must say I'm very happy with it. They are not all made the same. Maybe the same factory but made to different specs. Wilton's has some additional features and increased tolerances as compared to similar look a likes.

I've got the Yost 750DI5. I also did the due diligence and found the Yost to offer the most bang for the buck IMHO; rotating base and rotating jaws allow it to be used as a decent knife vise. Can't speak to the others, as I have not used them. I think I purchased mine at Amazon...same price as HD though.

Well, thanks for that feedback, the wild card is probably the Palmgren, I recently purchased a Palmgren cross slide vise for my drill press, and besides inadvertently ordering one that is borderline to big for my drill press, I have been well pleased with it--it is well made and heavy solid stuff. I too have thought the Yost was some better than the Wilton import, especially the fact that the pipe jaws 'float'--which the Palmgren does too..

I have a 79.99$ version I've been using for 10 years now and it works perfectly well. On imports with a big name, not sure if you are paying a premium for just that...a name. I am all for buying the best quality you can afford but in this case I am not sure the small jump in price really translate to better quality. Of course I haven't used any of these so I might be way off. Let us know how it works out.
