Not what you think :)

This post is for just the BF girls, ok you guys can look but no touching :)

Really now, how did you get interested in knives?

Hmmm, wonder how many female members there are......

Hubby had a Gerber something or other and a couple of no name fixed blades, then I started working at Spyderco. I was hooked! Now almost 5 years later, and even tho my stint at spyderco was "cut" short, (thanks to "Those in Authority") I'm still hooked.

I still collect spydercos almost exclusively, but I do have a fancy for some other stuff too.

My husband (Gundy) is a collector/user of EKI Commanders and through his 'obsession' I have become interested in knives.

His Busse Steelheart is handy cutting pumpkin :D ...

Only a couple of years ago I couldn't look at knives but how things have changed  ......I guess the old motto 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em', applies here!!

Bel (Emerson Girl) where are you??

I grew up on a farm, so knives have always been general use tools. My father had an old SAK that I got when he died. I kept that knife for many, many years before unfortunately losing it.

I have a deep fascination with knights, swords, fantasy, etc. I spent ten years selling knives and swords at Ren-Faires, science fiction conventions, and historical reenactment events. That is where I first started collecting custom knives. I even learned a little blacksmithing.

The kicker came one winter when I took a job at Chesapeake Knife and Tool over Christmas. I loved every minute! I learned so much about knives. I really got hooked!

A couple of years later, I decided to open a knife store at the local mall. I found BFC just around that time, so knives have turned into even more of an obsession.

Two years later, I'm looking at opening a 3rd store in a month and trying to figure out how to finance yet one more this year. (Unfortunately, I just had to shut down the second store so I may have to wait.)

BTW my avatar is the main store.

Pam

Danelle O'Shea,
What did you do at Spyderco?

Who says there's no progress! When I asked the identical question last year, I was politely told it was perhaps inappropriate because "...a knife enthusiast is a knife enthusiast, regardless of gender..." and that perhaps "...most of the female knife-knuts frequenting the forum might not want to identify themselves by gender..."

We've come a long way, baby! :D :D :D

My love for all things sharp came from my relationship with my father, my mother was/is an alcoholic and was never the motherly type so to speak. my Dad and my grandpa as well as many of my other relitives are hunters and Dad would take me with him everywhere, including all the hunting and fishing trips to Utah, Colorado and other places. My first hunting trip was at 6 weeks and I've been hooked ever since. My dad was there when I killed my first elk, my first deer, my first bear, He was there when I caught my first fish. And I will forever be grateful for a father who loved, who still loves his daughter and never left her behind always treated her with kindness and allowed her to become who she is today- me.

Damn, that was beautiful Lady. Hope my daughter thinks of me the same way someday. Aw crap, now all the guys at work have seen me cry.

People are just too tired to slap Pahl for his blatant cruising.

Hey girls, how do you like my avatar! ;)

I grew up in Solingen,Germany as an army brat and where my mom ran the local Rod and Gun Club, so I have always been surrounded by people with knives--and have remained interested ever since.

I grew up out in the country on a modern homestead, so using tools like knives, machetes, shovels, tamping bars, etc... came naturally. Everyone in the family had to pitch in equally if the work was to be finished before dark.

My intro to non-kitchen knives (proper) was to skinning knives, as I was responsible for skinning the deer brought home during hunting season.

I've always been interested in other cultures, especially material anthropology, so knives, bows, atlatls, etc... have always fascinated me. I'm very fond of flint knives and also Damascus steel blades, though I don't own any Damascus. (I've been hinting to my Dad about getting one for Christmas. :D )

As for defensive knives, I've only recently become interested, as I was involved in a dog attack recently. Unless Ohio ever passes CCW, I need another self-defense option, especially while hiking or if I'm ever involved on an archaeological dig where dogs might be a problem.

Thank you for the introduction opportunity.

Well a couple of her birthdays have passed since that post...is she still averse to knives?

My wife was REALLY not into knives when I started getting interested. Then I started picking up a few things for her...a 1950's steak and carving set similar to the Gerber Mining knives...a Chinese cleaver-style choi-do that will chop when her sharpest kitchen knives tremble in fear...one of those "Appalachian bread knives" that are neat looking and will cut bread without crushing it...now she carries a Jim Matthes custom in her purse and is going to Blade West with me later this month.

Gotta be devious, man..

Well, my g/f is learning more and more about knives every day! In fact, she'll be there with me at Blade West! :D

Out hiking, a 4 to 5 foot staff is a good idea anyway, and an effective defensive weapon, too.

Esav,

Thanks! I've been carrying a compact Leki staff, but an Ash staff might be wiser, considering the circumstances.

My wife took over my bamboo hiking pole because she is afraid of snakes. She likes the bamboo becasue it's very light for walkng and plenty strong to beat a rattler if she ever decides to step on one again.

10' Bamboo pole at the garden center - $1.99 - cut to fit and sand any rough edges.

I glued an appropriate size bolt into the bottom which also makes a nice eccoing click sound when walking. She's also afraid of bears so makng a little noise is comforting! I have a fear of bears to so it's not a girl thing!

Cheers ladies,
Collecter

sorry to bring the thread a little further off topic, but Steve Harvey, where is your avatar from. looks a little like something from marvel comics.
