I started carrying a hiking staff when I began hiking through an area with a lot of tall grass. Tapping the stick out in front of me warned all sorts of little creatures off before I got there :D

I have been into knives since I can remember, grew up an army brat then moved to the farm where I learned to throw knives (throwing knives) and hit the target every time, and I moved on to sword fighting, no not fencing, and then of course we decided that it might become necessary in our backwoods travels to learn to defend ourselves with sticks and rocks too.

Wow, a thread from 2002! Welcome to Bladeforums, redneckrebelgal. A bunch more women have joined since 2002; maybe some of them will see this thread now.

My Mom got me into knives when I was a little girl. My parents divorced when I was 5. My Mom took me camping and we went fishing together and all kinds of outdoorsy stuff like that. She gave me my first knife when I was 7 or 8, and have been hooked ever since!! I carry a gun for self defense, and I always a knife on me!! My brain is my first most useful tool, then my knife. I have been carrying/collecting/ using knives for 33 years now. I am in CRK & Custom knives. And I have a weak spoke for SAK's though. What can I say? PS: The other cool thing is that my Mom and I still share a love of knives, and I have been able to give her some really good ones!!

When I turned eleven I cried for 2 days until my dad finally bought me my first Swiss Army pocket knife which I carried with me everyhwere :) . Uhm he's bought me one more since then and a couple of my guy friends have brought me back some cheaper pieces. Used an old crappy fixed blade when I worked in an arboretum.

It wasn't till I found this board that I started learning about better brands and custom pieces. Have to many obsessions to put too much into obtaining knives but someday I think I'd like to get at least 1 or 2 really nice customs knives. Or a William Henry piece

I grew up on a farm, so knives have always been general use tools. My father had an old SAK that I got when he died. I kept that knife for many, many years before unfortunately losing it.

I have a deep fascination with knights, swords, fantasy, etc. I spent ten years selling knives and swords at Ren-Faires, science fiction conventions, and historical reenactment events. That is where I first started collecting custom knives. I even learned a little blacksmithing.

The kicker came one winter when I took a job at Chesapeake Knife and Tool over Christmas. I loved every minute! I learned so much about knives. I really got hooked!

A couple of years later, I decided to open a knife store at the local mall. I found BFC just around that time, so knives have turned into even more of an obsession.

Two years later, I'm looking at opening a 3rd store in a month and trying to figure out how to finance yet one more this year. (Unfortunately, I just had to shut down the second store so I may have to wait.)

BTW my avatar is the main store.

Pam

That's brings back some memories lol. I'm make a very educated guess that the first one was in the Apple Blossom Mall?

I used to hang out in there all the time with Mooch when he was working for you. How's it going!

I know this thread is a bit out of date, but girls like knives too, and why shouldn't they? My girlfriend begged me for a pink Kershaw Leek for Christmas. I got it and it was so cool I gave it to her last week.
