I'm looking for a big beefy folder under $200.

My requirements are:
At least 154cm blade (D2 & S30V are fine)
At least 3" blade
At least a .150 thick blade.
Thumb stud or flipper is fine with me.
Must have cool factor

So far I've looked at the:
Benchmade 275 Adamas
ZT 0560 & 0561
ZT 0200
Hogue EX02 Flipper 3.75"

Am I missing any other big folders? If the Adamas had a flipper, it would be game over! LOL

I currently have a:
Benchmade 551 Griptilian
Boker S2
Kershaw Thermite

ZT 0560BW. You will not be sorry. Tank of a knife, incredible blade. The textured titanium in blackwash is coolness factor off the charts. Opens like butter with the flipper.

Benchmade 810 Contego would be my choice for a beefy folder. You can have your choice of super steels in M390 or M4. Others I own are the ZT 0560, 550, & 301. All these can be had for under $200 (some on the secondary market). I had an Adamas but found the handle for too thick for the size of knife (IE, blade wasn't long enough to justify the weight and thickness of the handle for me). Also had a ZT 200 but did not like the super weak detent. Great knife but I like a strong detent.

That's a good point about the Adamas. I'd prefer a thicker blade and thinner handles (that are scaled appropriately for the knife). The DPx Hest looks interesting.

The 0560 is an amazing blade and you will not regret buying it, but don't count out the 0550 I like it a little bit more than the 0560.

Zero Tolerance 0550 series which you can get in stonewashed blade (0550) or DLC blade (0550BLK) or blackwashed blade (0550BW).

  • Made in the USA
  • Manual thumbstud opening
  • Titanium frame lock
  • Quad-mount deep-carry clip (tip-up/down; left/right)
  • Steel: S35VN
  • Handle: Textured G-10 front, titanium back
  • Blade length: 3.5"
  • Blade thickness: 0.156"
  • Closed length: 4.6"
  • Overall length: 8.1"
  • Weight: 5.8 oz.

Any of these. Like bottom 3 best. Can't choose an absolute favorite.

Lionsteel SR1A

I would respectfully disagree with the LS SR-1A. I own an SR2A and have handled the 1A...it is not beefy at all. Great blade, but the handle is slippery and the action is...okay, but not buttery. The one-piece aluminum body is durable, but this knife is not built like a tank like the ZT 0560. I would say it is more elegant than beefy. I own both and this is just my opinion.

Another vote on Lionsteel SR1A the knife has a 5MM thick blade in an integral handle with a seriously stiff lock. I have no idea how anybody could come to any decision other than the knife is built for the long haul.

You can't go wrong with any of the suggestions so far. I will add, with my ZT 0200, I just popped it apart and tweaked the lock bar a bit. Took about 5 minutes, and gave it a stout detent.

Seems like there's a run on beefy folder needs threads lately; anyway, get a Tops's knife...all their knives are prime bulls that will knock the chocolate out of the competition. Their Mil-Spie 3.5 should fit your criteria...

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Hogue EX-02? Although it is 154cm, it seems like a rather beefy knife.

The ZT0560 & 0561 are right at my budget, but fit just about every need.
