Wanting a Case folder for EDC

Fortunately, there's a lot of candidates:thumbsup: CASE majors on multi-blades, any of their Medium Stockman make an excellent worker and pocket mate. I prefer the Yellow Delrin Penknife over the Peanut, better blade length less stubby (but the Penknife is only available in Yellow D which is a shame, they also exhibit quite a bit of 'cant' blade droop from spine) The Half Whittler is also a very good choice for a compact but useful carry. Their lock backs, Copperlock, Mini Copperlock & Tribal are all very well made with decent blade lengths but not too obtrusive in the pocket. The Wharncliffe Teardrop is superior to the Pen bladed one as I find that blade too short for the handle length. But a lot of choice and that's never bad.

I think I've pretty much settled on one of the sizes of Copperlocks. Small or full size, either one with the standard clip point. I just need to decide on a size, and blade. I'm not too familiar with their CV or Stainless. Which one will get sharper and hold an edge longer? I think that's CV?
I would assume so. But you’ll need to wipe it clean after cutting your lunch sausage so it won’t get “patina” too quickly.

Myself, I opt for the Mini Copperlock - it's a bit ill named as it's not mini being around 3.5/3 3/8" 9cm) just right. The full size is a long thin knife that I find a bit awkward. The debate about CV:Stainless has gone on forever - I suspect its origin is received 'wisdom' from people decades ago who hated stainless, "it can't keep an edge" and this ignorant refrain has been kept alive o_O:D I've not ultimately found ANY difference in edge retention between the 2 CASE steels, they're good pocket knife steels and stood the test of time. I admit I haven't subjected them to 'scientific' rope cutting tasks etc.... It's just what you prefer or what you want on a particular knife. There are better stainless steels than CASE's but that's not the point here.

Yeah, the mini was the direction I was leaning. If I need something bigger for EDC, I could look into something bigger. I already have a Rat 1, which, although a modern folder, was still a damn good value, and I've grown to really like the versatility of the D2 on that one, it's just too big to want to carry around all day so I was mostly looking for something at about half that weight, and a bit smaller over all. The mini Copperlock fills that nicely. The mini Copperlock covers the 2-3" area, and my Rat 1 nicely covers the 3-4". Now I have the fun part of picking color. Leaning towards the navy blue or bermuda green, but I may just go for a cheaper synthetic, and make it one-of-a-kind replacing the scales myself with something a bit more personalized.

I have one of the Case Yellow Handled CV Pen knives, it is a good size and super slim and light in the pocket. Might want to take a look at that one as well

You could do a whole lot worse than the mini-copperlock. I have a red bone CV version that rides in my SUV's console. They are well balanced, and just pretty user-friendly.

The CV takes a more refined edge I think, so it feels sharper.

But the SS does okay if you treat it right. I sharpen mine with a soft Arkansas stone, and I don’t go finer. Then between sharpening a if it needs touching up I strop on my palm.

If using dmt stones I usually stop with fine. I have gone to the XF but it seems not to hold as long as a courser edge. But it’s a trade off between corrosion resistance and edge holding. For daily tasks the SS works fine. But for whittling, while I use it, I prefer carbon.

Yeah, I cannot think of any reason why the Sodbuster JR wouldn't be a solid EDC pick. The problem is, every single knife suggested is a great EDC pick.

I am also considering getting a new knife for around my home, mostly kitchen duty. I have a small kitchen, and never cut food in a high enough quantity to have to use anything larger. I may get a full size Sodbuster for that. The Otter Mecator knife, Opinel 12, as well as a couple fixed blades such as the Mora Campanion are on that list as well. In fact, because cleaning last night, and noticing a couple of the synthetic bearings in my Rat 1 were absolutely destroyed, that knife is pretty much out of commission at the moment, and that may prompt me to buy a larger knife for kitchen usage first, and a traditional EDC knife second.

That's where the Sodbusters and Sodbuster Jr really shines... in the kitchen. 🤠
Maybe. But I've used an Ontario Rat 1 in the kitchen for the past year, and I've learned a few things about folding knives for kitchen duty. The first thing I learned is that I don't need a large blade to do general purpose chopping and cutting. A 3.5-4" blade suffices. But I also learned moisture WILL seep in between any area where two materials are joined, and not completely sealed up with something like epoxy. If there is a gap between the line and scale, moisture will get in. Between the blade and liner as well. I got rust there, and also between the liners and scales on my Rat 1. The benefit of this Rat 1 is I could do a complete teardown and cleaning of it. On something pinned, I can't. Moisture will seep in to places you won't really be able to stop it or fully address it.

Since I've never held or handled any of these knife or blade styles, and have absolutely no idea what I would prefer in terms of handle length, handle shapes, the various blade shapes, thicknesses, etc, I've been considering picking up a few of the options from Rough Ryder to get a better idea of what I am into before I start paying more on things I wish to keep for a much longer period of time. I want to try out a standard trapper, stockman, barlow, and others. That would set me back hundreds if bought from Case, it'd set me back like $45 if bought from Rough Ryder, and if I decide I like one of those styles a lot, then I would pay for one of the more premium Case models in that style.
