Wanting ideas for my first Becker.....

I am wanting to get a Becker to mount to my atv rack bag. I want a fairly large knife to chop limbs out of my way while trail riding and exploring the woods. I know nothing about these knives except people on here seem to love them. I am a Busse, Swamp Rat kinda guy but i have started liking the looks of Becker Knives. Any ideas or opinions would be greatly appreciated and even maybe a pic of what you might think would work. Thanks....

A brush clearer huh? depends on how bad you want it :D. A bk9 is awesome and available now. Its the king of beckers and rightfully so. However the RE release of the machax is any day now (waiting on the china sheaths that apparently are lost somewhere in the pacific) and that thing from what I hear is THE blade to gave in the woods. Its a machete and an axe.

Or since your a busse kin guy, which means you got cash :D ;) you can always find what's in my signature. A Reinhardt Becker kukri. The magically mystical one.....but it'll take patience and monies. But with that the woods will just part like the red sea before you dismount your quad.

Yeah what he said :)

Welcome to the forum man :D.

If you're looking for a "chopping" becker, there isn't any better choice than the BK9. Its a 9in 3/16 thick knife that chops really well and also handles well for something of its size. Its comparable to the ESEE Junglas in chopping power (a little less generally speaking) but weighs less and is in a smaller package.

Here is mine.

Also, the BK4 "Machax" should be a chopping machine when it is finally released (any time now actually) if the past models of it are anything to go by. It is similar in size to the BK9, but with the blade canted forward like a kuhk.

And you can find a bunch of reviews for them in this thread :).

indeed, what he said.

BK9 would do the job nicely

I want something that can take a beating and with stand the elements. This blade will be a permanent mount on my Grizzly. I do trail ride in Arkansas a lot and we tend to get of the beaten path more than we should. I usually just fight my way through until the limbs get so thick that i just turn around. That's where the Becker comes in. I want to whack and hack my way through to the other side... Do the nuts and bolts on the handles hold up well?

it will probably hold up better than you :)

bolts? nuts? really? loctite, and forget them.

if it were me, i'd bring a short axe too. possibly a machete/brush hook with reach (thorns suck), and a saw :)

Nope, the turn a nice shade of orange.

But, you can replace them with stainless for next to nothing from you're local hardware or coop.

The BK9 will serve you greatly.

Welcome to the forum, brother, stop in often.

Yep, and if you have any issues just throw some loctite on there and you'll be good to go.

I've read about people having issues, but I've not had any problems with them coming loose on mine. Then again, I tightened them myself before my first outings so that might be why.

Eh the nuts and bolts do get rusty if left unchecked, but its not like any tool steel bolt wouldn't. 2 bucks at a hardware store and you get stainless hardware and a lifetime of worry free tightness.

I'd say machax for you my friend. That will do well for you I think.

I carry a pretty radical hand saw and i usually have a small collins Axe in my bag. But i want a Perm. mounted blade on my bag or fender for quick draw for limbs, vines, quad mounted zombies...you know

Get a 9 for one side of the quad then when the machax comes out strap that to the other side. I mean whats better that having a 9 on your quad........A 9 and a MACHAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The BK4 Machax looks like it would be hard to sharpen. If isn't a straight edged blade i have hell sharpening it. I do like the looks of it. I seen a video of Mr. Becker with what i thought was one of these on the web earlier today.

Killer pics ocnLogan! I like the Red liners on the bigger one. Is that the 9?

Yes sir, that is a pair of Flexxx's liners that I was gifted you see on the 9. He does them in all sorts of colors if you're interested. Also, you can make your own out of DVD cases as well.

And if you check out the Becker Review and Comparison thread I linked before you'll find some interesting reviews and mods on the BK9 that might help you out a bit.

And I must say, while the BK4 looks sweet, I think I'd have a hard time justifying it since I already have a 9. The 9 is just a classic blade, and I'm sure you would love it. The Becker handles are excellent :D.

Are the red liners standard or aftermarket add on for handle thickening? Do the 9 or Machax come with kydex sheath or any sheath at all?

Liners were added to thicken the handle. It seems like if you held a BK2 before you got one of the thinner blades (5,7,9) then you feel like the handles on the smaller blades are not as filling. So because of that I put on the liners to make the handles feel a bit more "like a becker should".

All of the blades come with sheaths. Nothing amazing, but entirely functional. Its just a black nylon sheath with a plastic liner and a little pouch that will fit an altoids tin. You can find some pics in this thread.

I honestly expected Clich to describe the incredible brush-clearing capabilities of the BK5....(joking!)
