Wanting to get into knife making!

Hey all, I've been looking around and learning a lot about knife making.
I've been using knives all my life and would love to actually make my own, don't care for monetizing it.
Just want nice custom knives that are mine and worthy to use.

I haven't bought any supplies yet and am thinking of buying stuff slowly and start getting into it around June/July.
Most likely going the removal route and starting with carbon steel.

What I'm curious about is if there's anyone in the Central New York area that's a knife maker that I could watch or even just sit down and talk about knife making.
I can't really do an apprenticeship since I'm full time Guard, however I'd love to see some one work on a piece of steel face to face.

However, I know there's tons of threads on what to do and not to do for beginners and have read the stickies.
I'd just like to see if there's a better experience in the learning curve of meeting a crafter than watching youtube and reading books.

Thanks for your time all, I love a lot of the work you guys do.

Take a look here. Call and talk to Joe. He is very nice.

Thanks a lot, will look into it and see if there's anything I could talk to him about.
I'd like to learn forging in the future but mostly want to learn about removal and HT and such.
I feel like I could get a good basis that way.
I'll definitely give him a ring.

If you were closer to New York City I'd say drop by my place. Joe is a good guy though. He's forgotten more than I'll learn.

Haha, that'd be a fun little trip.
Thanks again by the way, I'm really serious about learning how to make my own knives and use them properly without fear.
Or make something that a friend will cherish and use.

Plus I just like to learn how to make things that are useful!

In September, there is the Ashokan Conference, and other knife related events are held at The Ashokan Center during the year. There are many makers in NY, several in the Syracuse area.. Check out the New England Bladesmiths Guild.

To get to Ashokan from your place, take I-90 over to I-87 and head south - about a three hour trip. Attending the Ashokan Conference will give you a chance to meet some of the best makers in the craft, and learn a ton of stuff. Registration should start in a month or two.

As for getting started and what you need, here is a good starter tutorial.

The stickys have a lot more info as well.

Thanks a lot for all that information!
I could probably take leave and go to the Conference and see and learn a bunch if possible.
I'd absolutely love that.
