I've been using a very particular way of etching in order to achieve a 'fallout' look on some of my knives. Might get around to posting a few images for you, but essentially the result is a somewhat splotchy and uneven etch pattern on steel. I usually end up with a real nice light etch with some medium and dark spots distributed randomly.
This video is the closest example of what I do. I rock either a 12v power supply or 5v, both will work fine and you can make a 5v power supply out of a USB cable very easily. Substitute the q-tip for a piece of folded up paper towel soaked in a very saturated salt water solution and use sharpie as the masking agent. Sharpie seems to only work when doing electro-etching in this fashion, but as you etch the thinner areas start to lift and you end up with places that had thinner sharpie being etched more than areas that had thicker coverage. There's a ton of stuff you can mess with to achieve different results. Also I should mention that copper plated steel (super easy to do) along with etching, torching, stonewashing, everything looks very fallout esque.
