War hammer and friends.

How do you recommend attaching the leather, especially on the handle where I assume it will tend to move around?

I used rawhide, which shrinks quite a bit as it dries. Just get it soaked and wrap the haft, then let it dry. Leather works in kind of the same way, just wrap it really tight when it's wet, as it doesn't shrink as much as rawhide.

"The Black Mamba" what axe is that? or what was it if its modified? great looking tools
the black mamba is a modified Cold Steel trail hawk head with a Vec handle. The hammer poll is cut down turning it into an amazing fighting hawk.

Unfortunately the leather wrap on mine will have to wait a little longer. I ordered a 1"X 72" strip which arrived today. But my total knowledge of how to order leather can fit in a thimble because the strip I ordered and received was 8-9 oz., way too thick for my needs. So now I just ordered a piece of 2.5 oz. so we wait again.
Anybody need a 1" wide belt?

Really the blade seams wider than that of a trail hawk? looks like that thing does work though, gona have to look into that something like that for myself

I finally got the right gauge leather so wrapped head and handle yesterday. I think I'm gonna hafta smash something real soon!

Cold steel...

I finally after five years had enough of their pencil-thin, reverse tapered factory handle and tossed that junk. Ugh. The improvements in handling dynamics with a sledgehammer haft are worlds apart, not to mention the benefit of a permanently affixed head.

Increases of both 4" in OAL and about a pound of weight allow more forceful blows while actually improving deftness and recovery time as the heavier haft shifts the POB to 8" behind the head, where previously it was at 3".

Also saddle-stitched, stained and sealed a simple guard from 8oz leather.

Not the prettiest specimen, but; in all, I'm enthralled by my hammer.
