I'm getting a couple custom knives made for me at the moment. Then it dawned on me, I can have a war hammer too!

What would your ideal warhammer attributes be?

So far, for me, a head that won't deform or fly off would be my #1, then a shaft that is rigid and strong #2 (don't be weird).

I've always fancied myself a halberdier, but a bec de corbin would be pretty cool. Are you getting chainmail to go with it? That would be awesome...

My above post is a modified version of an idea Charlie Mike and I threw around in W&C many years ago, a folding halberd in CPM-M4 with quad triad locks, so that it could be carried on one's belt. I sure miss him.

I recall seeing the quad triad locks mentioned elsewhere. Unfortunately I didn't really become active much on the forum until after his passing. Which is too bad, he seemed like a man I'd have enjoyed talking with.

Hammer head - Check!
Pointed head to break or pierce hard object (like armour?) - Check!
Made to break rock!!!!! - Check!
Useful length - Check!
Once piece construction - Check, the head can't fly away!
Rigid and strong shaft usually means more shock to your hand, hence why hammer with bare metal handle should be avoided. Wood and polymer handle are not as strong or rigid, but they protect your hands. Estwing handles have proven themselves for a long time.

Joke aside, war hammer is a name for a very specific tool for a very specific job, hence a very specific set of criteria, so there is not much room for imagination.

Yeah ! I remember CM had a custom shoulder holster rig for a regular size hammer . 🤪

Lots of old posts from CM in Practical Tactical for anyone willing to search .

OK, so solid strong shaft that's long and flexible enough to still be comfortable enough in the hand during use that you wouldn't want to let it go. Head and shaft one piece.

Steel or ti or something else for the head?

Man, that's hard to decide. Let's do some math:
Head and shaft one piece = same material for head and shaft.
Shaft flexible and comfortable = non metallic Shaft
⇒ Metallic head = non metal
Doesn't sound good for a war hammer. I assume that you don't want a carved wood club or a injection moulded hammer, like your soulmate's drawer.

To be fair a well made joint is pretty durable. Lighter handle = faster swing = stronger impact with less spent energy, more hammering time!
Size doesn't matter if you are exhausted before getting the job done (cardio people).

Metal is heavier, along with other cons mentioned, not great for big impact tools.
Wood handle is light and comfortable, durable enough for your lifetime, but not as durable as other shaft materials and susceptible to rot if not well maintained, therefore could be less safe.
FRN (Fibre reinforced nylon) is in between wood and metal, the go to choice for many lumberjacks, construction workers, fire departments and even rescue teams (talk about being badass).

Titanium is great as it transfer power power than iron/steel, but the tip might break, which you don't want to happen during penetration.

I'll tell you, Estwing makes a great rock hammer, but I have to say it's not the liveliest thing to swing around. I've managed to give myself tendinitis with one (rock hammer elbow?) I think maybe something based on a framing hammer would have better balance and application as a weapon.
