War of the Roses...lets see your Rosewood sides

Always Tomboy there are lots of rosewoods. Most have geographical tags applied to their names but not all. There are many that have nicknames that are rosewoods such as Cocobolo being know as Mexican Rosewood. Then there are those that aren't as well. Bubinga is often called African Rosewood but its not a rosewood at all. However African Balckwood is. Go figure. Anytime ya have Dalbergia in a woods scientific name you have a rosewood.

Under one of my workbenches I've boxes of wood for knife handles stored. I have a cocobolo box that is in need of replenishing right now and I have a separate rosewood box. I gave up trying to keep track of all the different varieties. Just got a box of rosewoods.

Thanks very much for the detailed info! I'm surprised that African blackwood is a rosewood since it doesn't have any of the characteristics I'd associate with rosewoods, but since it counts, I can post my 72 here. :p

Not nearly as interesting looking as the more colorful rosewoods with highly contrasting grain, though.

I do like how the grain shading & direction got matched up on this cocobolo 74 stallion.

That is fantastically matched, indeed.

Before I started knife collecting I was into collecting traditional tools, especially hand planes, in a big way. Now rosewood is really, really common wood to use for traditional tools, but if you google Stanley rosewood, you get a very different type of wood than GEC's rosewood, much closer to their Cocobolo.

Cocobolo is also used extensively, for example in the gorgeous Millers Falls hand drills - I am lucky to own several of these.

Having collected these old tools for a while, I can tell these two woods apart quite easily - the cocobola generally has a more stripey dark/light grain and is a bit darker, but I'm guessing that their names, and the modern names or varieties that GEC uses, must be different.

Here are two, a Brazilan, and a Chechen.

Both nice, but it is hard to compare with Brazilian rosewood. It is no wonder it is hard to come by!

Here is one I bought new, kept a few years and sold to Trand (2Dead), who then sold it to someone else. I'm glad he still had a pic of it, cause it's the reddest, prettiest cocobolo I've ever seen.

Charlie that brazilian rosewood just glows doesn't it? Its by far my favourite wood even though I am a fan of cocobolo.

Beautiful Rosewood by everyone today! I had this East Indian Rosewood #47 Viper in my pocket today. :)

Glad you like it, Camillus!
It was nice to bring it out again! It's been sitting in the tube for a good year and a half!!

I hovered over this one for nearly a year. When I swooped the dealer said he couldn't believe it hung around so long . I think those days are gone:)

I love the subtle 'distressed' effect in the natural grain.

I don't actually have any knives with rosewood handles, but my last name does translate to battle of the roses. There are some really beautiful knives posted here. Thanks to all that have shared.
