I have wanted to make the LOTR Warg Riders Scimitar sword for years and years, but never felt I had the skill. Now, maybe I do, but in any case, it's now or never. I just got the steel from Aldo, and tomorrow I start the project. Wish me luck, boys. It's a big project for me.

Man, that's a big project for anyone. I wish you luck. Half the difficulties of these things is figuring out how to do it and where to start. But I think you've got that down.

This drawing has been floating around the internet for years, originating from the creative LOTR workshop. I have drawn out the drawing to full size numerous times, and actually translating a drawing to a workable pattern is the first challenge. It must also be noted that, more than likely, the man who drew this did not have actual experience with real swords, so getting a workable, fast and real blade will be a challenge in and of itself. The heat treatment will also be a challenge, as at this time I can only go to 24", and I want this blade to be at least 28-30". I can certainly ht the cutting edge, but I am concerned about the remaining 4-6" of untreated blade, plus the untreated 6-8" of handle. I may have to find help on that, and certainly, opinions are welcome.

What do you use for to heat treat? Ive seen a local guy heat treat a Damascus sword that was probably 3ft in a small 2 burner forge. He just pumped it in and out for like 10 minutes getting a nice even heat.

Yeah, not that easy, but doable. The real problem is how to temper a long blade once it is quenched. You need to maintain a certain heat for a certain time. Well, I will figure it out. I may try to find a sword maker who has the proper equipment.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing this! Looks like an awesome project. Will you be posting progress pics or just a final product?

Oh I agree it's not easy. I had trouble heat treating an 11inch chef the other night. The temper will definitely be the most difficult. Good luck man. I'm excited to see it as it goes.

Lol. I'm the worst person in the world to do progress pictures, but I may try only because I think this might be special. In any case, boys, you will surely see the final project, unless I do a spectacular fail :), in which case I will slink away considerably humbled.
