After the sub-zero temperatures we experienced here several days ago, we're getting some nice warm weather lately--up to the 40s Fahrenheit today. I took the afternoon for a good hike at a local lake (Branched Oak if you're from around here). With around 14 inches of ice on the lakes, I took advantage of the hard water and explored a few places one normally wouldn't go.
I started off following one of the creeks that feeds the lake.
With the temperature swinging above and below freezing everyday and regular fog, the snow and some plants were covered in interesting crystalline formations.
This area is often filled with waterfowl. However, the pheasants have taken over in this cold weather.
The creek was a popular place for critters to walk.
After a while, I crossed a short marshy area and took off on the surface of the lake.
The ice looks like it has a lot of texture, but if you weren't on snowdrifts the ice was VERY SLIPPERY.
Saw a couple critters. I actually got off the lake for a while and went to a different area where wildlife is a bit more plentiful to get these shots.
Deer
Pheasants
And finally watched a brilliant sunset.
