Hey Guys,

With winter upon us. I am determined to not have cold and tingly toes this winter. So I am asking for y'all's expert opinion. Please recommend me some warm, thick, and wear resistant socks. Perferrablly wool please. Thanks.

God Bless

Get some thick merino wool ones. My job before I started my business was running an online business for a specialty outdoor retailer (REI type products), so I own probably 100 different pairs of merino socks. I personally like the WigWam ones the best. They are soft, very comfortable, do not overheat my feet even in the summer, and hold up really well.

SmartWool, Keen, and Icebreaker are some other good brands, but I still think WigWam is the best. WigWam makes probably 100 different styles of socks, so check them out at your local store to see which ones you like. The InGenious (sp?) ones from them are really cool because they have a liner layer sewn in to the sock, making them even more comfortable by wicking away moisture better than just regular merino blends.

If you want some nice socks on the cheap, check your local Costco. They sell packs of 3-4 pairs of merino blend socks for something like $10, and while they are not quite as nice as the above brands, they are leagues better than wearing cotton or regular wool socks. They would be a good way to see if you like merino or not (you will :D ).

Got as gifts. I'm HARD on socks, all year around. These held up wonderfully.

Don't know that I'd pay that much if I were buying for myself, but with boots, shoes, or athletic shoes, they have been marvelous. No holes worn through, warm even when wet, and some substance to them.

I don't usually recommend such things...but if you have the money, buy a pair and see. You'll be surprised at the durability.

Cool do Merino wool blend socks hold up better than plain wool sox?

Yes. Rag wool (what most people think of as "wool socks") is a very different textile than merino wool. Merino is hardly scratchy, if at all, unlike rag wool. It is also spun into finer threads and these are much more durable than the large threads in rag wool socks. Basically, it's a completely different fiber, except they both come from sheep.

Walmart has the 90% or 95% Woolworth merino socks in the outdoor section and although they aren't cheap by Walmart's usual standards (about $10 a pair if I remember correctly), they are worth every penny. I bought 5 pairs at the beginning of last winter and they have held up to repeated washings and still look and feel like the day I bought them. Very thick and comfortable.

I've bought the expedition weight Smartwools when www.sierratradingpost.com had them on sale. I like the regular Smartwool hikers better for most applications but used the heavier socks under Meindl winter boots for elk hunting in -10 Montana November weather. They were warm, especially with a fine liner sock under them.

I've had good luck with WrightSock wool hiking extra socks. They have a wool outer layer and a built in liner.

LLBean used to have their 'Hollowfill Boot Sock' made of hollowfill insulation and wool .They are VERY warm ,I don't think their could be any warmer . LLBean no longer has them but perhaps someone else does . Google it.

The Wigwam sub-zero is similar. I have not tried them but I intend to this winter.
I will generally not need a jacket unless it is below freezing but my fingers and toes get cold at much higher temps.
Thanks for starting this thread.

I buy Thorlo also but Cabelas has merino socks branded with their name and they usually have a "buy two get the third for half price or free" thing in fall.

Does anyone know the "right" blend for wool sock material that keep feet warm? I used to think higher wool content the better. Maybe, it's the type. It seems not to be the case. Thanks.

God Bless
