The rifle is a custom built by Lon Paul,375h&h magnum, the bear skull was almost 27" a great bear .A very demanding hunt,it was a slow spring on the Alaska pennisula things started off slow, very cold.Bears were just begining to come out.But a great hunt with a very good cilent.

I've also got one of Lon Pauls built 375h&h's and its a one holer. It's built on a CZ-602 magnum mauser action, he used an old Rigby as a template. It actually looks just like a rigby he also put a model 70 safety on it and casehardened some various parts. Lon builds some awesome rifles. Congrats on the bear also.

I notice most people are going with the stag handle HB more times than not. In your opinion Joe does this make for a better user handle for durability reasons or is it a good looks thing? I don't have any real experience using stag and maybe i need to get on Bill's waiting list for a stag of my own.
I'm a fan of stag-handled Bowies as well, but when I ordered my HB last month, Mr. Bagwell told me he's only done two stag-handled HBs and doesn't recommend it for that particular knife. Has to do with it rolling in the hand on the back cut, which the coffin-handle won't do. Since I called the man appealing to his wisdom, I went with cocobolo, per his recommendation.

Yes JP, It looks pretty much like yours, i believe Joe Coogan also has one made up like it. Lon made mine up in the early 90's. I got the idea after seeing him make one up for a writer for guns and ammo magazine. I've still got the article around here somewhere on the entire project. Lon Paul really does some great work. Thanks Doug,

I have the same article and thats when mine was made up also. It has killed 3 Cape Buffalo and alot of other critters over the years

he told me the same thing but when i ordered my two i knew i wanted the coffin anyways. I like the looks of stag and to hear Joe say it is the most durable of the two makes me want one.

I've admittedly had a small crack appear on my user HB with African blackwood handle. I have yet to send it back to Bill to be repaired. I had been applying some boiled linseed oil to the handle every few months and never thought about it then it split right at the first pin:o. I did alot of research on BF to find the err in my ways and have since started using lemon oil and renaissance wax. My HB has been wet and in humid environments to be put away in a cooled air conditioned house so maybe it was bound to happen but i think it was my fault mostly.

Still i think maybe i might get on Bill's list for a stag someday just to try, plus it will go good in the collection.
