WARNING! Don't get CLP on RC-4 handles!

Hello everyone,

I just got my new RC-4 the other day. And as I do with all my carbon steel blade knives I went to apply a little bit of CLP on the edge to keep it from rusting.

Well I accidently touched the handle and it stained it. It would seem that these handle slabs are like sponges.

So...I just covered the entire grip with CLP and now I have truly black handle slabs and it would seem that the CLP soaked in very well. You cannot even smell it any longer and there is no adverse consequences with grip performance.

Just a warning though if you don't want the handles changing color keep CLP away from them.

isnt that like drain cleaner or something? why would you put that on your blade?

Cleaner Lubricant Protectant. Same stuff I use for all my weapons. Used it in the Marines and have since.

I think you may be thinking of CLR. That is a drain cleaner

oh. :D well i just got back from a long day, and i was like "why would he put drain cleaner on a knife?" that is odd that it discolored the handle.

It isn't drain cleaner. CLP (clean/lubricate/protect)...popular with gun and knife users alike.

i got it man thanks for the heads up. i just had a long day and i am a little tired. CLP CLR they are pretty close. :D

When I got CLP and Rem Oil on my RC-4, I scrubbed it with Dawn soap and hot water and it cleaned up nicely.

LOL No problem. Yea it sucked it up like a stinking sponge. It turned them very dark almost black.

This is my first RAT knife, it would seem they leave the handles without any kind of sealant so they grip better when wet. But the obvious drawback to that is they are gonna stain.

Does blood stain these things? I mean if you used them as hunting blades that could get nasty.

any dish-soap will take it off.

I do love CLP though... good stuff

Even after I soaked them with it? I didn't know what else to do, I didn't want big nasty spots on them so I made them "Even" and covered them completely.

Easy to clean. I use an old toothbrush and Dawn dishsoap.

Actually, I dont usually clean them...but I had to try it.

yep. even if you soaked them with it. Twill be ok, I promise. I like a stiff plastic bristled scrub-brush. toothbrushes might be too delicate.

My RC-4 is just two weeks old and is already looking mangy. I mean well loved! I'm at ease now that I've put the first scratch on the blade. Little tank of a knife.
The handle is black from where my sweat has soaked in.

Interesting... I used a Tuf-Cloth on my new RC-4 the other day and accidentally glooped a little on the handle. Next day, you couldn't tell...PHEW!

Thanks for all the replies folks!

So it would seem that this is normal with these knives. The material in the handles will soak up liquids but can be cleaned. Well that is good news. :D

My handles look dirty just from holding the knife with sweaty hands. Micarta sucks up anything.
