Below is the text of a letter I sent to the Tennessee Division of Consumer
Affairs. It is self-explanatory.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Division of Consumer Affairs
State of Tennessee
500 James Robertson Parkway
Nashville, TN 37243-0600
Sirs:

Following is the text of an email I received from the National Knife
Collectors Association, an organization located in your state, on January
11, 2006: "Thank you for joining the NKCA. We will process your order and
get your membership package sent out to you within the next 7-10 days.
Sincerely, Lisa Sebenick, NKCA Mgr." A copy of this email, with full
headers, is attached to this letter.

Since then, I have received nothing from this organization. Repeated
inquiries go unanswered. Management and/or circumstances change, and
previously reputable organizations can become less so.

I do not expect the State of Tennessee to investigate a $28 complaint.
However, scams sometimes involve small amounts of money with many victims.
Please file this letter, and if you begin to receive more than a few such
complaints, you may then decide to investigate.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

David W Cohen

Moved from General.

Thanks, I hope they get things going soon, but in the meantime I'll try to find out what is going on.

Wow, as David W. Cohen he posted the same thing on Knifeforums. Here is what I posted in response, and have yet to hear back from him:

"Wow David,

I called the phone number listed on the NKCA Website twice recently - to rejoin and to reserve a table for the recent show in Dayton, OH. The first call I received their answering machine, left my name and phone number. The next day (an impatient one I am) I called again - unfortunately for me, it was after their offices (according to the answering machine) - however, as I was leaving my message, the phone was picked up and I was able to pay my dues and table fee over the phone.

I have always had positive dealings with the NKCA; for the most part the members that attend shows are very friendly and at my first show by myself (recently in Dayton) most helpful in setting up my table and commenting on the nice selection of knives I had available. As a follow-up to my membership, I received a nice book about counterfeit knives...

I don't know what you have done WRT trying to get ahold of the NKCA; I think your heading of WARNING: NKCA is a bit harsh especially on a public discussion board. If you would like some help trying to get in touch with the NKCA and trying to resolve this issue please PT me your information; one of the National Officers of the NKCA lives near me, I usually see him once a week. Drop me a note.

Thanks for the offer of assistance, but the issue is not worth any more of my time. The TN Division of Consumer Affairs and anyone reading my post can do with the information as they choose.

David,

I don't understand; you went to a lot of trouble to insinuate that a 30+ year old organization dedicated to collecting knives was involved in a scam to rip people off. Your posts about this subject were in my opinion not the best way to resolve an issue and when offered help by a member of the NKCA you say not worth any more of your effort.

Thanks. After reading your original post on Knifeforums I offered to help you. After I made my reply to your post I spoke with an officer of the NKCA and alsoto Lisa of the NKCA. For the record For whatever reasons there was no record of an application for membership from you nor was there any record of e-mails. You must not want to be a member of the NKCA - nor you must not want to resolve this issue. You do have a right to write any letter to anyone you want but I personally think that your letter to the Tennessee Consumer Affairs Department was premature. An older, wiser person once told me that in order to fix a problem you have to let them know there is a problem. Apparently you chose not to let the NKCA know that (you) there was a problem.

Making a mountain out of a grain of sand.....

I don't understand this really. You are upset enough to post it on three different knife forums and write the Tennessee Division of Consumer Affairs, but you aren't willing to take an offer of assistance or get any kind of resolution?

In my experience the NKCA is slow. I have let my membership lapse, but when I joined they took a while to get a membership packet. They took even longer to get the free knife offered as an incentive. They are a national organization but in relation to other national organizations they are pretty small and do not have a huge staff to process mail or answer the phone. A few years ago I had to call them several times regarding a show and every time I called the same woman answered the phone when I was able to get through. I feel certain that they will come through, and I am 100% positive that they are not a "scam."
