Hi everyone,

I’m posting to share a serious safety issue I experienced with a SOG knife purchase and to see if anyone else has encountered the same problem.

I recently ordered a SOG Pentagon FX Covert manufactured by GSM Outdoors (SOG Knives). When the package arrived, I discovered the knife had been shipped loose inside the box with the blade fully exposed. It was not secured in a sheath, nor was there any protective covering over the edge.

I opened the box from the top, excited to see my new knife. I had no idea the blade was loose and exposed inside. As I reached into the box, my finger made contact with the sharp edge, resulting in a deep laceration that required medical treatment and caused me to miss time from work.

I’ve since filed a report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) because I believe this is a significant hazard that could injure other customers if it’s not addressed.

I’m curious:
  • Has anyone else here received a SOG knife packaged this way?
  • Has anyone had issues with GSM Outdoors’ shipping practices or product safety?

I’m not trying to bash SOG without cause—I’ve owned plenty of their knives over the years. But this was a serious safety lapse, and I want to warn others in case this is a larger issue.

Thanks for reading, and stay safe.

I have photos of the packaging and my injury if anyone wants to see how it arrived.

You know what they say, “pics or it didn’t happen”

I am not sure how to upload the photos. I opened the package from the top down (tore into it) and as I opened it my finger struck the exposed edge of the knife.

Thanks everyone—I’m working on getting the photos uploaded. Looks like I need to host them externally since I’m not a paid member. I’ll post the links as soon as I have them.

Did you not look before you reached your hand into the box?
Thanks for the question, 91bravo—that’s fair to ask.

I actually couldn’t look into the box properly because everything was packed so tight. That’s why I ended up tearing it open from the top. I had no idea there’d be an exposed blade loose inside the box instead of secured in a sheath or covered for safety.

As I tore the box open, my finger struck the exposed edge of the knife, causing a deep cut. It was definitely not something I expected from a new knife purchase.

I’m working on getting photos uploaded so everyone can see how it arrived. Since I’m not a paid member here, I’ll probably have to use Imgur and share links soon. Thanks for your patience.

Here is the photos of the package and injury

You can see in the photos that I tore the box open from the top down because everything was packed so tight. As I opened it, my finger hit the exposed blade inside the box, which caused the injury. The knife wasn’t secured in a sheath or any protective covering.

You should have no problem getting a settlement offer, just get a lawyer. That’s crazy they shipped that no blade cover. You were like a kid with a candy bar!

I'll note that those two statements above tell different stories to me.
I did find one unboxing video, and it does appear that the knife was packaged the same way as what it appears to be in our photos.
if that happened to me, I'd blame myself, not the knife, or teh packaging -but I'd let them know.

they've been packaging blades like that for a while now. think you're the first to have tried to rip it open, and cut yourself while doing it. next time remember regardless of brand when opening any box with any blade in it, to be careful. there is a sharp knife in there. same applies to clam packed knives packaged much the same way.

That box is just for the knife. Assume if it was shipped to you it was in another box for shipping correct?
Although it could have another plastic sheet over the top, seems like your ripping the knife box apart with little thought is on you. You ordered a knife hello.

My spidey sense is not at all comfortable with the OP. Why mention missed work time unless you are thinking lawsuit? Why ask forum members for their injury horror stories with this knife mfgr and knife vendor unless you are building a lawsuit? You filed a report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission because you opened up a knife box like a 5 year old on Christmas morning? How much do you want the knife industry pay you for this "significant hazard that could injure other customers if it’s not addressed?"

How does one who "owned plenty of their knives over the years" not know how to open an SOG box, or any knife box, for that matter? Sorry, I just don't believe any of this story. Looks like lawsuit phishing directed toward a tool and weapons industry that serves responsible adults. And every successful nuisanse lawsuit is paid by this industry - our industry. An industry that we love and support. So we end up paying too, one way or another.

I gash myself all the time doing mechanic work. I wrap a wound like that in duck tape and a snippet of paper towel, and get back to work.

I say deep-6 this thread.

Meh. The knife was packed securely and wasn’t “exposed” til you exposed it. I thought you meant they just threw it in the box loose.

If you sue you’ll probably get something out of it, even though all you should be getting out of that was the lesson.

Well the thread was deep sixed 4 months ago till someone revived. it. Now it's back to the top.
