Well, It was a last minute decision to attend the Blade Show, and am I ever glad I did!
Got out of bed this morning at 4:30AM and headed off to Hot 'Lanta! After a stop in Greenville S.C. for a hearty, healthy breakfast at the Waffle House, I walked in the Cobb Galleria around 9:45 this morning. First stop was to table 18-B to check on the N.C. Knife Knutts. Found them all accounted for and happy as could be. When you hear and see what they picked up you'll understand why.
Finally caught up with Tom Mayo around 11:00 AM as he had been a "bit under the weather" WINK, WINK!, quite a guy, and I am glad I got to meet you Tom!
Got to meet several guys I have done deals with over the internet, and it is true that no one matches the descriptions you have of them in your mind! Ancient Sul, Bladezealot, LYFESFUN, and Penguin were just as happy as those proverbial "pigs in slop".
Completed a few trades, thanks to N.C. Blades and Tom for their purchases, and made a few purchases myself. I picked up a copy of the new "2002 Sporting Knives" which promises to hold several hours of intense reading. Of course it will be stored next to the throne!
Finally broke down and purchased a rayskin wallet in black with a white stripe lengthways. This is some TOUGH stuff! Oh yeah, also picked up a large Sebenza 2001 wood inlay model with ironwood. Very pretty piece of ironwood at that with a lot of dark stripes for a great contrast. Just couldn't resist it since I sold the 2000 woody with ironwood a few months back! Best part was I got to talk to Chris himself. He is a great gentleman, took time to talk BEFORE he knew I was going to purchase the 'benza!
With all the great knives there this was the extent of my buying, but it was well worth the trip to get to see all the makers and manufacturerers. Picked up a lot of info. some verbal a lot in the form of catalogs.
I would urge anyone thinking about attending to do so next year as it is worth it. The only problem I ran into was not going down on Friday, since a few makers were sold out of their most popular knives. The story that was told to me had a "feeding frenzy" going on at the tables of Kit Carson and Darrel Ralph. As I understand it buyers were literally throwing money down on the table at Kit's going after his creations! Did notice he had a few neck knives left today, and boy are they nice and priced right.
Guess that is all i have to say about it. Again I am glad I decided to go, as I got to meet some folks I probably wouldn't get to meet any other way, and got to catch up with the N.C. Knife Knutts again.
BTW- If you get a chance to check out the work of Andrew McLurkin, do so as he is doing some awesome knives!
