I was thinking of the multi fuel forge thread and someones comment about using compressed air to push the oil into the nozzle. A light came on from work. We never ever put compressed air into oil lines. Never. We do use nitrogen. The reason you should never pressurize a oil line or vessel with compressed air is combustion, just like a diesel cylinder. Used oil could be worse because of fine metal suspension causing the oil to be more pryophoric. If you take one of the oil burners from our huge furnaces out to clean it the junk in the tube will often self ignite on contact with the atmosphere. PLEASE BE CAREFUL with oil and compressed air. If you were to partially fill a small air tank with some diesel or kerosene and pressure it up with compressed air it may well detonate on you.

This is why I got a fuel oil pump, like the ones used on furnaces. It puts out up to 100PSI and I bought an atomizing nozzle. Now i need an electric motor to run it and all the plumbing. Hope to get it done in the next week..

I am interested in adding an oil burner to mine also. I am going to switch from 1 big propane to 2 smaller ones and an oil burner. Just can't believe I didn't pick up on that when it was first stated.

Idea on the pump motor. A bench grinder motor with a pulley on each end and one turns your pump and the other a squirrel cage fan with ducts to the air valves for the burners.

A lot of the guys using oil burning foundries have a line running straight from the compressor guage to the forge. They say that the suspended metal particles actually INCREASE the btu of the used oil.

Yea I've seen the oil under pressure thing in action...my brother in law and I were using our father in laws pruning rig which is a compressor running 175 psi...we heard a loud pssssss and looked down in time to see a hydralic hose that had been substituted as an air line turn bright orange as it as it lit up...that was something I'll never forget! Thanks for bringing this up Jim. I was the chucklehead who was going to use air presure to run my oil burnner. I have tank about 40 gal. I hooked it up to my compresser on the top of side and the bottom has a line to the burner. The burnner also has a air line. I was going for something like this. http://www.bro.com.au/burners.htm I guess I should use a pump instead of presureizing my tank. I sure as hell dont want a 40 tank of oil explodeing on me! Thanks again.
