I just bought a 12" Nicholson bastard at Home Depot. When I got home and started using it I noticed it seemed to be catching and hanging up quite often. I assumed it was because it was a nice new sharp file but when I held it up to the light I could see it was bent a bit. When I look down the length of it I can see that it's twisted as well, about 20 to 30 degrees:eek:

Is this common? Should I have inspected it before purchase? I assumed being a Nicholson and hearing that it is the file of choice amongst most here that it would be of high quality and I wouldn't have to worry about such things. I guess that's what I get for assuming.

I will be returning it the next time I head to town but for now I think I can work with it's flaws.

Nicholson files are good files, probally just picked up the bad one out of the bunch, usually the ones I get are good, maybe they will take it back and not give you any slack about it, good luck

I agree, sounds like a fluke. I've gone through quite a few Nicholsons of various types and haven't gotten a bad one yet. I doubt they'll take it back if it's been used, though.

Depot will take ANYTHING back if you insist..

I've seen 3 month used carpet, broken hand drills, all sorts of stuff...

Darren,

There not that expensive, and I've heard they are in the 10xx series or steel (1075 or 1095 I think). Why not forge her into a knife and just but another file.
