Warped Stabilized Scales??

The best way to describe the appearance of the scales is that they look like an apple that's been sitting the truck floorboard in the heat. I'm wondering if these weren't fully dried when they "stabilized" them.

Well I'm tired of waiting for him to answer me

Here's my first email from the first of the week:

Hi,
> Back in February I bought some Stabilized Eucalyptus Burl Scales, ebay # 120164828237, my ebay name is Leavittknives. I've had the scales sitting on my wood shelves and pulled them to put on a knife, the scales are warped. I've never had stabilized scales warp before. They are stored on the same shelf as other stabilized scales including some from you, K&G and WSSI. Any suggestions?

After nearly a week and no answer but him having time to eBay stuff I sent this off:

Earlier this week I sent you the email below. Since you have failed to answer me I will take your silence as your answer. While I can't leave you bad feedback on eBay I CAN ruin you on the internet knife forums and I WILL. It's amazing that someone will lose their integrity over less than $20.
> Sincerely,
> Will Leavitt

His reply came back immediately when he thought I was asking for money:

First thing, i did not get into e-mail to read your first message.
Second, what do you expect us to do when you have left them sitting on your shelf for almost a year before you decide to use them
We always gaurantee our items, but not almost a year later!
I cannot believe that you expected me to refund your money after that amount of time, do what you want on your forum, anyone with common sense will see that this is a rediculous reqest after that amount of time.
We have several loyal repeat customers that purchase from us frequently, because of the quality of the products we sell!

Granted I could have been nicer in my second email but I hadn't had my coffee and he was sure fast to email me when it came to a sale.

His ebay name is geraldine5588

Stabilized and dry are 2 different things. Properly dry scales (varies on types of wood) are going to have very little shrinkage or warpage. Pentacryl takes care of most woes (I use it on virtually every type of wood...)....

Stabilized is an overly used term. A lot of folks think you throw it in the oven for a few hrs to dry and it's stabilized.... Not so...

I've stabilized my own scales for a long time now, and it's a pain in the ass process...

Stick with staburl or Geraldine Jacobs (can't remember the screen name, but it's Geraldine something or another.....).... on Ebay..... I've never had a problem with either of those...

Mark, IT IS Geraldine/Bob Jacobs that I'm having a problem with.

This is a frustrating issue I know about from personal experience. Stabilized wood still moves. Just not as much as it would otherwise. Burl wood *really* moves around - a lot. I have a fair amount of experience with K&G and WSSI. I trust them both to be as good as the process can get. They do not seem to use the same chemical but it appears to be very similar.

A couple things will help. Keep any wood in larger than needed block form. Cut it into scales a few weeks out from use (I know - who does that?) and let it settle again. Cut the scales thicker than needed. If you have scales already cut. Store them under a large, flat weight.Expect scales to move a lot more than a block. Once you glue it onto a tang, it's going to stop moving around so much. The thinner the scale, the more it is going to move.

I have purchased some nice looking wood from Geraldine (red mallee) and it did the same thing. Perhaps I should have caused more of a stir, but instead I pitched it. Can't say I would consider purchasing more....

Just had an idea... How about asking them to exchange your beautiful rocking chair rocker for a BLOCK of something similar, in the unstabilized condition. Wait for it to be dry and then send to wssi. ?
