Warranty Problem/Issue

I've only had to call warranty on a few occasions for a stripped screw or pocket clip. They never gave me an issue or charged me. However today I called because I needed a clip replacement for my new Native 5 g10. Was out hiking and it fell off somewhere. I called and the lady wanted to charge me for the clip.

What changed? Policy change? Are they hurting for money?

It just threw me offguard.

I don't know when the changed, but it obviously has since you last got one. I've only ever purchased new clips from Spyderco. Granted, I've never actually lost a clip, I just happened to buy a couple of used Spydercos within the last couple of years that no longer had their clips on them. They charged me both times, but the amount they ask isn't outrageous, IMO.

I've always paid for extra clips. Though I've only ordered when I wanted to replace a coated one. Every company I've ordered one from charges.
I don't think its their fault you lost it. I check to make sure my clips are tight.

I've never needed more clips from Spyderco but as far as I know, they have always charged for clips.

Only company I've requested clips from is BM and they sent them free of charge. Split arrow oxide clips. A bunch of them too.

It was like 7-10 shipped. You can get deep carry titanium clips for that price.

Where ?
I will order some at $7 to &10 shipped. I've never seen a deep carry Ti clip made to fit a Spyderco for anything close to that.

I bought a car once, and I got mad when they expected me to pay for a new windshield when a rock chipped it.
I feel your pain.

How does a pocket clip "fall off?" 3 screws just loosen up all togeter at once... hmm

I'm editing my post. I was in pain and it wasn't written very well and I was grumpy. Spydercos warranty department needs some work but it looks like they are working on it.

I will let others come to their own conclusions about the warranty and stop complaining about it. Maybe I've just had really bad luck so far.

Interesting. I've never had to order a clip from Spyderco, but I've ordered parts from Benchmade and Kershaw and both of them refused payment and sent the parts free (internationally) along with a polite email. A company is under no obligation to give parts away for free, but it does say a lot for a companies dedication to having happy customers when they do. At $10 per clip Spyderco is hardly price gouging though, it seems like a fair enough price.

It sounds crazy I know but it happened on my Delica 4 many years back. I wasn't paying too much attention to my knife and when I checked next it was without a clip. Really strange because I never messed with the clip before and I wasn't doing anything except carrying it normally during the day.

I was on a long hike. It was also being carried as a back up blade.

You can buy titanium clips from usaknifemaker. Depending on the clip type you may have to widen the holes. Fit bm perfectly.

Benchmade and kershaw have always taken care of me on replacement parts. So having that experience to then being asked to pay after I describe what I need and what happened. I was a little surprised.

I just wanted to hear others experiences.

The world I live in if you need a part, you pay for it. The only exception is if the part failed or fell off due to a manufacturing defect. When a screw came out of my new Lum, spyderco gave me a replacement for free. Chris Reeves charges $15 for a clip for a sebenza.

I'd suggest you check your screws occasionally to make sure they are still tight. CRKT puts this as required maintenance in their standard statements with every knife they sell.

As a gift, I let a young woman pick any knive from my collection (custom or production). She chose the Matriarch. It's an original with the barrell screw for the clip. The clip was scratched up from many years of carry as a self-defense weapon, but thankfully never used. I got a new one from SFO for somewhere around $10 including shipping. They sent the clip, the screw, the nut and a small tube of original Loc-tite. Not a bad deal in my opinion. I called on Monday and received it on Friday.

I was reading your post and thinking "Loctite...loctite...loctite..." because I have had those loosen in ordinary use - but there it was down near the end of your post! :)

They call that "going to the well once too often". Personally I don't mind paying for things I'm buying. :)

I don't mind paying for things either. That wasn't the point of the topic. It was asking if they changed their warranty on certain things.

I will be loctite all my screws in the next few days. ;)

Interesting point Joe. Maybe if the same person keeps calling and makes it some sort of pattern there is a charge for some of the items. Clips have always been sold though. They can be had online if a person is slightly well versed in using Google.com. Now to clarify, this doesn't sound like a warranty issue. The clip may or may not be defective, as weree the screws, or the knife itself. This sounds like a problem incurd by the ELU.
