Warranty work or self fix?

Where did you purchase the knife?

sal

Sal,
I was able to purchase this knife through your ops focus program at spyderco. It is wonderful to be able to thank you directly for your support. It is much appreciated. In addition You have some wonderful employees that are always courteous, friendly, and most importantly helpful. Kristi has been absolutely great. Thanks again to you and the wonderful Spyderco family.

Im a little in awe here so I will shut up now.
Shane.

As I suspected lots of opinions here. I appreciate them all it's ultimately my decision and now I can make a more informed one. The big thing pushing this as I said was price and no experience with bearing systems.

For some bearings are not looked on favorably but for me the verdict is still out. My domino is an amazing flipper and I'm sure it's due to the bearing system.

Ultimately it seems the verdict is to clean it without disassembly. Believe it or not this did not occur to me. It is just my nature to want to take things apart and I know most of you here are probably the same. Thanks for the awesome info.

The ultrasonic is a great idea. I have used them before in the past at work. They were however much more than $20. Now that I know they can be fairly inexpensive and I know I can use them for many other things I am going to track one down and see what's up.

Thanks for the new knowledge.

I bought a cd-2800 on that website named after a rainforest for around $20. Though I reccomend using warm water, about as hot as the sink will get and keeping the lid up as I hear of people having their units break. But I suspect that is due to condensation seeping up into the lid where the switch to turn it on is. So the choice is risk destroying it or more noise polution, if it means anything I probably used it around 100time's (pressed the button that many times, 3min timer) with all the stuff I cleaned with it. So it might be wise to invest another $10 or so into another unit that doesn't have that problem, you be surprised at how useful these things really are once you use it. I've been cleaning parts to my airsoft guns in it mostly and they won't ever get anywhere near this clean by washing it by hand.

Certain things it will destroy such as pearls, and it seemed to have taken off some of the coating on my wooden opinel handle (and made the wood swell for a day due to the water, 3min in ultrasonic). And I heard of it stripping certain finishes off of guns, but a lot of people use it for cleaning firearms you just have to know what your putting in there. So far I've used it on my rough rider canoe (black jigged bone, aka armor hide), kershaw cryo/blackhorse ii, ka-bar dozier, leatherman micra, and probably a few other knives with no ill effects.

And if it comes with a watch holder, it's meant to keep the watch face out of the water so you can clean just the band. If the whole thing is submerged you can destroy your watch no matter how water resistant it is. (I didn't know this till I started looking into this, heck I didn't know these things existed 3months ago.)

Just be sure to not put your hand or any body parts in the thing while it's operating it's very bad for your health to say the least.

I've had problem like this before when I first got my Southard. After I had taken it apart and cleaned it and whatnot, it was never the same. I would advise against disassembling. Apparently the alignment of the two pivot screws is very specific... Another reason that it wasn't flipping great is because of my detent ball being quite worn. It's best to just keep it together and clean it from outside. From personal experience, my Southard doesn't like a lot of oil. Just a small amount to get the action going would be enough.

Just something for you to think about if you do decide to tinker with it... I did pop out my detent ball and turned the flat part inward. I used a corner of a file to augment the detent ball's "catch" on the blade so it sits deeper. These two things alone should help with the action. This last part you may or may not need to do, I replaced the ball bearings with aftermarket ones that rolls better. My Southard flips quite well now.

If you are still active duty or close to people who are, some units have u/s cleaners for their weapons - might be worth asking around.

Sent you a pm with some questions.
