I started this piece as my first try at doing a lost wax casting of a Bald Eagle. The rocks that the Eagle is sitting on I carved out of extruded black acrylic and painted them. After many many hours and days of trying to get the detail of the Eagles wings carved right with the warm clay drooping some thing had to go with it to really represent the word Freedom. So next came the scrimshawed fossil Walrus tusk that I spent MANY hours on with the nine faces of Freedom and that led to the knife. So the more I tried to work on every piece of this project the more upset I became because of the word FREEDOM and I want to be free myself free from this cancer crap.Every thing that goes along with it the chemo,radiation,12 hours of surgery you begin to feel under physical restraint.I"m sure anyone that has it feels exactly as I do.I guess I should be thankful I am still here and not eating daisy roots.Well I tried to correlate the feeling I have into my scrimshaw with the center Bald Eagle (under the fish in the Eagles talons) looking old with ugly feathers a elongated beak and a mean upset sickly look.I think it worked.
Anyway I also carved the Salmon in the Eagles talons out of a piece of ivory. The knife blade is a Warrencliffe design with a chisel grind done by my friend Jack ONeill. You did a fantastic job on the blade Jack and I thank you once again..The Eagle is a polymer resin. The knife handle is a piece of a Inuit Indian sled runner that is a very old relic.I wrapped Sinue through the hole in the handle and attached a small feather to it.The Bald Eagle I scrimshawed on the handle was really difficult due to the ivory being porous and chipping because of its age.The piece of wood surrounding every thing was found on the beach. I am not sure what it is but it sure complimented the whole piece. The whole display sits on a piece of extruded black acrylic with a Eagle, the words SOAR LIKE AN EAGLE and FREEDOM with my name laser etched in gold color.Well thanks everyone for taking a second look and comments are always very much appreciated.FREEDOM specs are below.
