whats hollow-ground?

im asuming these knives are full tang?
Hollow ground is when the blade surface is rounded inward. On the Boker A-F and other daggers, think of the blade as being like a partially flattened triangle, with the bottom of the blade being slightly rounded inward instead of flat.

Regarding the tang, I do not know what it looks like, but it is fully covered by the handle so I'm guessing it is not a full tang. Usually a manufacturer will advertise a knife as having a full tang if it does, since this is the strongest tang style.

Probably the best way to find out more about the Boker A-F dagger (including the full size model) is to create a new thread asking about it.

the hollow ground refers to the unsharped porion between the handle and sharpend portion of the blade?

good idea about the other thread.

No, it's the shape of the blade itself - the sides of the blade are concave if you look straight down at the point of the blade.

See this page for a graphic showing different blade grinds for comparison - a bit less than halfway down the page: Jay Fisher's page

NN, What TJ said is correct when describing a blade that is ground the same on both sides; in other words, the portion of the blade down to the edge on each side that normally would be flat is ground so the surface curves inward instead of being flat.

On the Boker Applegate-Fairbairn dagger, the side of the blade that you cannot see in the photos is hollow ground from the tip down to where the grind stops just a short distance from the guard (both sides are ground the same length from the tip).

hmm, how so, maybe I or someone else can point you to some other makers more your taste (not that there's anything at all wrong with wanting an RJ Martin, but when the bug bites, you'll be expanding your horizons pretty quickly:D)

i never should have come here. never should have asked question. never should have considered buying a custom knife. now, im justifying in my mind a separate "knife budget" for this new found collection i want to start.

horrible.

KnifeCollector: im almost 100% sold on the martin. but it will have to waite (damn x-mas). i think im over the folder. i have too many lying around my place that have been demoted to blunt splitting duty. my kershaw is great EDC. but i have been looking as some other fixed blades. i have yet to find another cool knife like the Kumo. i really like the one solid piece of metal with either the wrapped handle or the handle that shows the tang. the knives with fully enclosed handles just look a little cheep.

Yeah, well hanging out here is bad for the wallet!! And so is being a knife knut to begin with!! Like I say to people, just open up your wallet, and say buh bye to yor money, and just accept it!! Yeah, you made a good choice in choosing an RJ Martin knife!! What else can I say??? I understand!! We are all here for ya!

cool, of course, that does leave some more cash left over from your $150 budget, and blades hate to travel alone in shipping... :D

ROFL. last thing i want is a brand new knife thats bored to death out of the box.
would be a shame. this is my first budget fixed blade, so i think ill get the one and see how it goes.

thanks again for all the great links and sugestions.

welp it came in today. its nice. it feels good in my hand. only thing i dont like (call me crazy) but the spine of the blade is too thick. its dosent stick into my tree round very well when i throw it.

ah well. i still like it a lot.

I am glad that you like your new knife. My question is, what are you going to get next?
