Was the Schrade Santa good to you?

Along with the requisite piece of coal for being bad, I still received a couple of new knives from Santa. These are Schrades that are probably common but that I had never seen before; a 36OT Saddleman (the awl is really neat), a 61OT Slim, and a 93OT Wrangler, all new in the brown and tan boxes.

The one that intrigued me the most though, is an unfinished Cope with black handles. It's a version of the 77OT with a gut hook on one blade, or more correctly, a version of the 877UH, except the gut hook blade on this one has a locking mechanism which the 877UH doesn't have. Now, I've always wanted a Muskrat and don't have a 77OT, and I don't really care for gut hooks, but when I saw this one, I had to have it. It must be because it's black with brass trim:

Very nice! Santa Schrade brought me nuffin, but the postal system is still resting the shetlands, so I am sure the box will be full tomorrow. I acquired so many FIXED Schrades leading up to Christmas, I don't feel deprived at all. I am still enjoying the newest 165, the orange Deerhunter.

And my pool construction customers are so happy with my work to this point, they offered today to pay the final completion payments early, and allow me to postpone pouring their decks while I build the third pool. Sometimes life is good, even when you've been bad. I did buy more work tools leading up to the Festivus. And got a 16' laser story pole for Christmas to go with my eBay'd new CST Berger laser transit (Codger discount like the knives, 1/2 MSRP!).

No pics of the other knives? A family portrait?

My wife got me a 108OT, 33OT, and a 34OT all USA made from down at the local (old school) hardware store. She said she picked through to get the best ones based on her recollections of what I had said in the past about what I look for in a slipjoint. They are all very nice examples, though they sold for full retail.

I also have to add that my sister got me the book Whittling and Woodcarving by E.J Tangerman. It is hard bound, 13th printing (1949?) copy. On one of the front pages it says this "The quality of the material used in the manufacture of this book is governed by continued postwar shortages."

Pretty neat stuff, to me anyhow.

A very nice assortment! The 61OT Slim Premium Stockis one I would like to add, but I have to wait for a "deal for real" to come along. Thanks for posting those! For those of you not aware of it, the 61OT is a close Old Timer cousin to my favorite EDC, the 897UH Uncle Henry.

The 36OT Saddleman was a short run knife from '90-92 and a direct version of the 34OT. I don't have that one either.:(

The 93OT Wrangler is another Old Timer based on the 897UH Signature Premium Stock, but with only two blades for a slimmer profile.

Yup, a nice assortment, and very thoughtful of Schrade Santa!

PS - We don't mind a bit of oil on the blades!

Nice redshanks!
The first 36OT I got was the skoal model without the 36OT stamped on the tang. I went back to the store a couple weeks ago and found a regular 36OT on sale for $21.95 so..........I had to get it. :D

I won a 93OT recently on ebay but when I opened the box it was a toy car. I emailed the seller and she apologized and said she got a couple packages switched and will get it straightened out.

The 61OT is my all time favorite Schrade pocket knife. I have one I bought in the 1980's and have been looking for another. Being of Scots decent I am not willing to pay the price they want for some of them. So I am playing the waiting game with codger.......good company I am sure.

The Schrade Santa brought me a 156OT and I was quite pleased. :D

A new 61OT went for $41.00 last night (#6590394519), new ones don't often go for less than that. There's currently a 61OT with cell handles that looks interesting (#6591423049).

I have those except for the 93OT. There was one on eBay recently, but it went too high. The 61OT is probably my favorite Old Timer yet, if I had an extra to carry, I would.

Santa didn't bring any Schrades this year, but on Christmas Eve, the mailman brought a 53OTG.

The 61OT I bought was only $34. It's unused with the original factory edge, but didn't have a box. Naturally, I prefer knives that have the original boxes and accessories, but not if it means paying twice as much. It does make me want to hunt down the previous owners and ask them, "What did you do with the box, you sloppy jerk?"

Best Wishes,
Bob

No schrades, but my sister brought me a nice gift from the Oklahoma area...

It's actually a Camillus, pimped out by Sante Fe Stone Works.

Very nice piece, IMHO.

I missed the $41.00 one, however I did see the cell handle one. The seller indicated it was a re-handle so I decided to pass on it, though I appreciated his honesty.

Nice Camillus Glen! Sante Fe Stone Works puts out some nice stuff. I have several Camillus and like them, especially the carbon steel ones. I went to Big 5 Sports the other day because they had some knives on sale and found to my chagrin that the Camillus they were selling were made in China.

I have a Santa Fe Stoneworks Camillus knife that I bought years ago at their store. They do beautiful work and I've thought of picking up one of their Spyderco works. But it seems that every trip down there I rarely have time to stop by.

Nice knives. I particulary like that 93ot. I notice it is stamped Schrade+, were they all like that or were some made with carbon steel?

My reference says they were all supposed to be Schrade+, and used the 897UH blades, albeit stamped 93OT. But with Schrade............

Gave my son an orange 158ot and a stag handled lasered duck stamp 152 ltd sharpfinger and a green handled guthook model and a little finger 156ot and an xtimer camp knife among a few more as well as bucks and case knives that he got from other family members. he has a huge collection for a ten year old! he is also an excellent shot with rifles, shotguns, and handguns!

For many years I've been using Aluminum Oxide,Wet or Dry,abrasive paper in 120,240,400,and 600 grit to do the initial blade prep and/or damage repair on my knives and plane blades. Then,I go to the bench stones and strop.
I have a semi-flat piece of cast steel about 2" X 6" X 16",that I use as a backing.However,it's not perfectly flat.
When I noticed this granite plate at Woodcraft
http://www.woodcraft.com/family.aspx?familyid=4864

I decided that it was the pefect gift from my wife.
It arrived yesterday and I love it.It weighs about 15# and the top service is dead flat, with the final inspectors report to prove it.
At $30,plus $7 shipping,I think it's a bargain.:)
Happy New year,
Ron
