The sebenza for a long time was a huge hit, now that the umnumzaan has been out for almost a year; is it a huge hit like the sebenza was? What do you think of it?

I just got an Umnumzaan a few weeks ago at a local knife show. The dealer had both a large Sebenza and the Umnumzaan, I picked the Umnumzaan.

It was a very hard choice , but my wife convinced me to get the Umnumzaan. I figured her choice would be completely unbiased and I did like the ruggedness of the Umnumzaan.

According to the dealer the Umnumzaan is a very good seller and is harder to get from CR than the plain Sebs. He knew I was going to buy one or the other so I believe what he said.

I'll also add that it is a fantastically made knife.

Th local Reeve dealer here told me that they cant keep them in stock. Everyone that comes in is pre-sold and Chris Reeve is still 200 deep at least back ordered.

Yes that's pretty much what the dealer told me too.

How are they back ordered and cant keep them in stock, google umnumzaan for sale and they are at dealers right now. Anyone who wants one can go to neil at true north knives, he has plenty.

I got to handle an Umnum at Blade- and I wanted it. They're pretty dang sweet. I know they're big- but they don't seem as big as my large Sebbie. The action is soooo smooooth.

They are getting easier to find now.

The thing I noticed about the Umnumzaan over other knives I own, is that it doesn't break in the same way.

It is smooth and has gotten smoother , but it doesn't loosen up like less expensive knives, it feels consistent every time you open it.

the thumb studs look so close to the frame, is it hard to open?

No, the studs are over-sized, plus they have synthetic rubber "o" rings that add a little grip. The frame is also tapered where you would place your thumb to open the blade. It doesn't have a lot of resistance holding the blade closed either, it's very smooth.

I can't keep them in stock. They normally fly out of here within a week of arriving.

Is the same true of a large plain Sebenza?

Thanks.

Glad to hear they are doing well, I wondered the same thing.
Almost bought one when they first came out(I have Sebenza's), but didn't like the "dinosaur" fin on the tip area. Going to wait till I can handle one.
I know they will be a super knife otherwise.

I didn't buy the Sebenza, but when I compared the two , the Seb was a little easier to open because of the ergos ( it was slimmer and the thumb stud was in a slightly better position). Overall they were about equally smooth.

It was definitely a hard choice and the Seb I looked at had a polished blade and double studs.... it's now on my most wanted list. :)

I just can't get past the scallops on top of the blade, just doesn't look right to me, I'm sure its a great knife though.

Granted this is a horribly subjective question. But is it “as good” as the Sebenza? Looks wise I think I prefer the Umnumzaan.

I don't think it was a Huge hit at all. A hit yes, but not huge.

I thought I was going to buy one at Blade last year, but after looking at it I held off. It was smoother, but I much prefer my Micarta inlay Sebbies. The Blade and handle shape of the Sebbie will be hard to top by any maker, even Chris himself.
