Was your Strider SnG worth it?

My Sng is a fav in my rotation, very verstile knife. I will add other Sng's in the future. I like the choil on the blade for choke up. Knives are tools for me but the Sng held in the reverse grip is very comfortable and stable.

Heck yeah its worth it, I should know I have 13 Strider's and 6 of which are SNG's, go for it!

ive had them and sold/traded them, they are good knives and the digicamo blade is awesome, ergos are good.i just always wanted something different so off they went. bladeforums is the best i would take ajack60's honorable gesture and see what ya think.

Wow guys, as always I'm incredibly impressed with all your feedback. I just emailed ajack to discuss his offer.

I will add if I end up liking my Rat 1 more- I will lose my mind! ;) Got that like a month ago and dang...that is a great folder!!

Rpn, this made me laugh out loud! :D

I've had my Rat 1 for almost 2yrs now and it's knives like that one that make me question myself so hard before potentially buying knives like a strider. It's seen it's fair share of use, sometimes hard, and it's still rock solid. It wasn't flipping open like it should so I took it apart and cleaned it last week. Bam, like new again.

I believe its a right of passage per se, on these forums you will read about different knives and it will get your wanter going. The only real way to see if its worth it is to get one and see if that strider "click" gets you when you open it. I went with a smf ( I like bigger knives) was it worth the money spent on......well after a few monthes I'm selling it. I feel the crk umnum. is better and I"m really digging the ti military. I think for the price range there are better "edc" blades but only a strider is a strider. I have no regrets with my strider the ftf is awsome the blade is great I just prefer a diffrent style. The best thing is if you keep in good shape you can get your money back. So long story short go for it, you have very little to loose.

Quite frankly, the stuff about Striders having poor fit and finish is bulls#$t. Maybe in 2005 that would have held some weight, but as of late, Strider has been on par with any other respectable midtech knife company. Personally I liked the feel of my SnG more than my Sebenza - it felt sturdier, was WAY easier to deploy, and just looked plain cool. As for cutting performance, I don't think the SnG is that much worse either... it can still do everyday tasks quite well.

I will pass along one warning, understand that no matter how "tough" any folder is, it is just that, a folder. It won't cut better (at least not $300 better) than a $80 folder. If you are just in love with the design and have the means, go for it! Does my Sebenza cut better than my mini-grip? No. Is the CRK stronger than my mini-grip? Probably, but if I'm testing that theory, I'm using the wrong tool for the job and should have been better prepared from jump. If this is your first mid-tech, even though the $300 bump in price is going to try to magically put a spell over you and make you think it will do things other knives can't, it's just not true (hell you can do pull-ups on a $80 Cold Steel). I got sick when I got my first "big" knife and though I love and have come to respect the craftsmanship of it, I know it's not magical in the real world. Just make sure you get quality craftsmanship to the nines from whatever knife blows your skirt up.. and there will be more.
Best of luck brother.. and that was a really nice gesture from Ajack.

Most guys here have more than one knife, and at times we add to the collection/rotation. The Strider SnG, I'm glad I have one, and I'll get a SnF CC in the future.

Strider offers many steel choices, I recommend snagging something different than S30v or the CMP154(both great steels), just to set your Strider off from the Norm.

SnG's are pretty light, and they fill my hand well. I have many Microtech's I like, but don't carry that often(almost art some model), but a SnG SCREAMS to be in the pocket.

If you don't like, sell it here, they sell quick, hell any brand, get a knife that doesn't turn your crank, ditch it, and enjoy another model or Brand.

Go for it, don't dream the what if,lol.

Please share in this thread what you think after having one for a couple of weeks.

I've wanted an SnG/SMF for over 10 years now! I bought my first fixed blade Strider back in early 2003 because I was getting deployed to Iraq and needed a tank with a sharp edge! Didn't have the funds back then for another Strider and have lost touch with my obsession of all things sharp until a camping trip a few weeks ago when I busted out the trusty old Strider WB-Mod10. Now that I make good money I remembered my lust for it so I searched and searched and like you had no idea which I would like or even which grind I would like.

Here's my take on it and my reasoning:

I was so torn between the SMF and SnG because I just couldn't tell if the SMF would be too big or the SnG too small. And I was searching my fingers off to see which grind is "better" for what I would need, and which steel, and which color. Basically going crazy lol! But this is what I figured...

SnG's, SMF's and most Striders are like good model/year Porsche's... they take a slight hit once they're not brand new anymore, but after that they hold their value better than any other production knife out there. In the last few weeks that I was looking for mine I've seen beat to hell ones sell for only $25-$30 less than the damn near brand spankin news. Some sellers are motivated cause they see something else they want and need the money quick, others ask more and hold out for that desperate guy who just learned about Striders and has to have one but they're all sold out for the moment.

So I waited "UN"-patiently for a DGG in 3/4 grind, non-stone washed, in one of the super steels (CPM3V, PD-1 or Z-Wear) to pop up and jump on it. I didn't care which color, so that made it easier. Then bam! I found a MINT brown BGG 3/4 in black Z-Wear steel for the same price as I've seen basic Lego's going for, some in worse condition! The seller just needed it gone quick. The way I see it, I can get the knife, try it out for a few weeks (careful to not scratch it up too much) and if I don't like it I can literally sell it for the exact same price I paid for it and loose $5 in shipping which I could chalk up to a few week rental charge. As long as you get one that's in good condition and get a good deal on it you can sell it right away for almost no loss. There's NO WAY I could loose money on my mint DGG in Z-wear in a pinch (because I got such a good deal on it) and I honestly think if I waited until there's was a lull in production I could probably make $50 on it.

So just stay on the hunt for a good deal on one that's more desirable than just your run of the mill (if that's even possible when talking Striders) SnG and jump on it!

My opinion so far??? .....I LOVE this thing!!! Now I just really wish it was Ranger Green. So I'm wondering if it's worth selling just to change the color lol!
(sorry for the mega long post!)

He he heee...knife angst! In my head as I pulled the trigger on the Strider was "If it's not for me than I'll just sell it, get a fishing kayak and another Rat 1!"

I used it a bit yesturday and will get it out today too. I will say with all the Chris Reeve talk, I checked out my cousins Strider and Sebenza and I find them different...I saw what folks love about the sebenza..it just oozed perfection, amazing fit and finish that I don't see with the Strider. But, I am more comfortable with the Strider as a user/carry knife. This weekend I dropped my zt801 on concrete and scuffed up the handle...that hurt a little. With the Strider I could see thinking "It adds character."

ymmv

Good luck deciding! :D

Ajack is sending me his so I imagine it will arrive next week. I'll follow up once I'm able to absorb it a little bit.

buy one. try it. if you don't like it, I'll buy it. Just give me a deal :) I have an SNG I enjoy. My only qualm is it is rough on the pocket and hand occasionally, so I'm waiting to pounce on a SNG CC or SMF CC... I won't pay retail.. I'll wait for the exchange... Rolf, you know nothing! ;]

I've also had some strider issues, and would take a CRK over those anyday, but to each their own, and perhaps that isn't exactly your question here.

It seems you're wondering if your first "expensive" knife will be worth it. In my opinion, if you find the right one for you, it'll totally be worth it. I purchased an old small bg42 sebe about a decade ago, it cost (at the time) more than 5 of my other most-expensive knives put together. I felt kind of silly/wrong/stupid for spending so much on a single knife, but even today it's one of my go-to's and I've never regretted it. There really is something to the addage of "you get what you pay for."

I think every true knife junky needs a first "bank-breaking" knife, whatever range that may personally be. I doubt many of us have looked back from there.

Another thing... Striders and Sebenzas are insanely good trading fodder. Combine that fact with the awesome (mostly) guys in the exchange and, for the price of shipping, you can try out many many nice high end production and custom knives. I've had around 10 high end folders, all stemming from one original blade. It's true that I must keep each one mint in order to preserve its value, but there's no other way that I could have had many thousands of dollars in knives pass through my hands. I've also, now, had a chance to develop my sense of what I really like.

Aside from what I wrote in my first post, I think maybe you should get one. I know that the knife is not right for me at all, but I'm happier for having had the chance to learn by experience.

I can completely understand that an SnG may not be suitable for many folks for many reasons, but simply saying "over-priced" or "not worth it" is silly. The market determines that and as already pointed out, a person rarely loses whether trading or selling.
