washing a knife in the dishwasher: screws up heat treat?

Here is an interesting link. It mentions that some dishwasher detergent contains silica (quartz) sand as an abrasive. It mentions that powdered dishwasher detergent, even if it does not contain silica, might be abrasive, at least until the grains of detergent have been completely disolved. It also mentions that the detergent can cause chemical etching due to the strong chemical bases the dishwasher detergents contain.

I am not a chemist, all I know is what I read on the internet. :)

Warning! Never wash your knife in the dishwasher. I have bean following this discussion and when I was loading up the dishwasher today the thought came to me to put my full size griptillian in and see what would happen. I was wondering if it would dull the edge. I made sure it was nice and sharp before putting it in. I let it run the complete cycle including the dry and when it was done I reached in and pulled out a mini grip. I was thinking of getting one but not this way.

All kidding aside, the knife was not as sharp as it was when I put it in.

Hey 5pins :) ,

Put it thru again.....maybe you'll get a Micro Grip. Sell it on ebay, make a Billion.

IMHO you should never was anything of quality i.e. silverware, good dishes, and knives in a dishwasher. I used to work in a place that sold these types of items and manufactures would put that it was dishwasher safe but for prolonged use hand washing was best. Just my 2cents.

Why in the first place should you wash your pocket knife in a dishwasher?
Is it to save time. Allright, if you have 10 dirty pocket knives at the same time:rolleyes: But even in that case, I will clean the carefully by hand.
