wasp blade design?

Hi,

I am new to this board. What is the purpose of a wasp blade design such as those on the Gerber Mk II and the Ek knives?

As far as I know it creates a recurved area on both sides so you ged a better cutting effect. It also looks cool. Also, I wonder if by having a thinner wiast, once you get past the relatively wider tip the knife has much less resistance while penetrating.
