Last Week I was going by one the fancy new stores in Coeur d'Alene Idaho. They had

Carpenters framing inside and a pile of scrap wood waiting to hauled to the dump. I looked

closer and realised it wasn't pine or poplar but rock maple! I asked the foreman if I could

take the wood and He said yes. So now I have close to two cords of rock maple 2x4.2x6,

and 2x12 scraps for keeping the house warm.

Softwood Lumber is expensive enough,I can't imagine what rock maple would

cost, and why if somebody paid all that money why they wouldn't use every bit of it. I

must be getting old.

You're going to BURN it??? Think of the cutting boards, the knife handles, the...

Nice find, i am sure they will have invoiced the firm for the full cost of the wood plus a percentage, they got paid for it all so they they dont care about the short lengths, left over.;)

You shoud see what bits they pick out & keep though! :D

What, where, I was just in Coeur d'Alene. I live in Spokane. Man missed that one. What is Rock Maple good for besides burning? nice knife handle? ooh, nice stained hawk handle?

You do realize that you could sell this stuff on the exchange and make a profit right?

Knife nerds don't waste anything and save any scrap in drawers and boxes. This stuff could be making knives 100 years from now.

Take some pics of the good stuff and use the cash to pay for wood that truly is good for nothing but burning.

Burn something else.
I have some maple planking from Santa Clara University's old Toso Pavilion that I've got in the garage. Not highly figured but a few nice pieces for knife handles and the odd project. Have to be sure I get the staples out though.

I am saving a few pieces some of which will make a great neck and body for a electric guitar and a

few knife handles, but a lot of it has so many knots and nail holes that it isn't worth keeping. I'll use

what I can and the rest will keep me and the kitties warm. You have to keep your eyes open,I have

scored some great Burled Walnut,African Sapele Mahogany and a solid Oak desktop through

scrounging. I was wondering what great wood finds you guys have found? What projects have you

made out of it?

I had a forumite send me a box full of osage orange. It was 80 years old and had been fence posts. He said he had stacks of the stuff.

My uncle saved hardwood that got storm damaged on the property for years and years. He has passed now. Every time I go home I visit one of the sheds and pick out some dirt covered mystery board. You can't linger in those places. Wasps and recluses galore. But when I get home and shave off an edge its like opening a christmas present. I've gotten walnut, mahogany, cherry, and cedar. Y'all have seen some of the walnut.

Hi folks
The BEST set of wooden arrows I ever owned were rock maple.Heavy but incredibly, mind-bogglingly tough and durable.I shot some of those shafts for a decade!

Rock maple is way too expensive to burn!! If there's anything you need in the way of fine cabinetry, talk to a good artisan and see if he'll make it for you in trade for the rest of the wood.
