I'm in the market to replace my watch. I've had two watches over the years that I've really likes. A suunto Vector and a Casio pathfinder both with compass, barometer, altimeter, thermometer, etc... I hike a lot so those functions are nice but definitely not necessary. I don't know much when it comes to watches, I wear one everyday. It gets abused, scratched, etc... I'm looking for some suggestions on a new watch. So far I'm thinking about a G-shock but theirs a million models and I have no idea where to start. The other is a Suunto X-lander military. other than that I am completely open to suggestions.

If you do make a suggestion I'd appreciate it and it would help to know why, what the pro's/con's are you have found, Functions you use most, etc.. Thanks!

^ good point :)

Well considering I abuse my watches I don't want to spend a ton. I'd say $300 or under? However I'd consider something more expensive if it really spoke to me eventhough with my watch track record I probably shouldn't.

I was going to ask the same thing as the OP.

I have some "dress" watches mostly in stainless.

Looking for something DURABLE. I knife hunt hogs in Texas, so something that can stand up to drops, bangs, dirt, sand, water, etc.

I was thinking a Seiko Black Monster....

Any opinions? $700 or less is range

Lol yea - generally same question. Didn't think it would make a lot of sense to start another thread on same subject on same day

I've been wearing this for the past 3 months and have been quite pleased. It has the ABC functions you're looking for although the thermometer's reading will be high when you check the temperature with the watch on as your body temp will factor in.

I really like the large simple display and how light it is. It way less clunky than my gshock.

Here's mine with the positive display(not my picture)

When shopping for a watch, comfort is the highest priority. For bomb-proof you are barking up the right tree with G-shocks. I have also found my Seiko diver to be pretty much indestructible.

Seiko skx007 is pretty much the best value for money auto diver watch out there, and due to all the spare parts and also customisation of these you can have an awesome mechanical watch thats been tried and tested for not much.

If you're looking digital. Gshocks are where it's at, go with the basics, and then figure out if you need all the compass, baro, alti features. The basic 5600 range is an awesome place to start.

if you've already got nice dress stainless, get a gshock mudman it will take the lickin you'll give it hunting. Metal watches can hurt a little if they get caught between you and something hard, so get something with a little protection, and softer outer, like the gshock.

I really like the Gshock mudman. Anyone have any experience with the mudman? I'd use it hunting, fishing, hiking, running spartan races, etc... So it needs to be pretty tough.

Mike8008- what model Suunto is that? I really like that one as well and am a huge fan of Suunto.

Man, sorry about that.

It's the Suunto Core.

Thanks :)

What is the best gshock mudman model, theirs about 30 different mudman models.

I you want to stop getting your watches scratched up, stop buying plastic watches. The above Marathon TSAR is an excellent choice. It has a sapphire crystal which will not scratch, and it is made of a good stainless steel. It is quartz, so you will have to change batteries very few years, but that is common with all non-mechanical watches. I have the automatic/mechanical version of this watch, the GSAR, but they are probably a bit more than you want to spend.

The Seiko skx007 is also a fantastic suggestion in a mechanical watch. While it does not have a sapphire crystal, it is durable, and one of the best watch values out there.

I do like the Seiko it's a nice watch. A little dressy for my taste and I do prefer a watch with a lot of functions like the g-shocks but I wouldn't be opposed to trying the Seiko thanks for the suggestion.

I recently got another Suunto Vector in a trade. It's pretty much brand new I think I'm going to try and trade it for something different since I already have a Vector. It's an awesome watch if anyone is interested in trading for something.

watchuseek has a G-Shock forum: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f17/ Do some google searches for this forum on models you're interested in and go from there. Also check out reviews on the popular online site that begins with an "A" and ends with "mazon".

GW models set themselves to the atomic clock in Colorado every night, this is a cool feature. I also recommend one with "Tough Solar", no batteries and it charges itself on solar power, you never have to worry about it. I'm kind of waiting for the new GW9300 Mudman to become available, apparantley Casio is still recovering from the tsunami and this model is only sold in Japan and is super expensive.

I have a GW2310, been wearing it for a couple years and it still looks like new. I like the simple display, everything I want to know and no crap about tides or moon phases. The Solar is awesome and the atomic clock sync works well.

like Elconquistador suggests, an atomic solar would be the lowest maintenance one available. I'd go for the Casio Men's GW9000A-1. Solid choice that can be had for around $100.

Any G-Ssock will work. I don't really care for the watches with a compass/barometer/thermometer. Pretty worthless IMO.
