watches...

Well, since we're playing show & tell, let me share my watches... my "dream" watch had always been a titanium watch. When I was really dying for one, you really couldn't get a full Ti watch and bracelet for under $500 or so. I never had money like to spend on watches, to I waited many years until I found a Ti Seiko Perpetual Calendar on eBay. I sold that watch a while ago. I just recently got bit by the Panerai bug (also don't have THAT kind of money), so my most recent acquisition is a Marina Militare Panerai homage with Titanium destro case and a sterile dial. I can't wait to see it. Anyway, I was pleased with my Seiko, and I've been bitten by the Seiko bug and have been acquiring them over the past few years.

The only quartz watch I own is this Luminox "Navy Seals." It is beat to hell and I bought it that way. I think I got it for like $60. This one is on a Maratac Zulu 5-ring strap. The bezel is totally loose and it's really beat up, but it's nice to have something you can wear under any conditions.

My first automatic that made me realize I loved Seiko divers (and why I sold my Ti Seiko)... the Black Monster on the wonderful stock SS bracelet:

My favorite watch of all is the 6309-7040. This one can from the Philippines via eBay and I got it for under $100 (head only). I think it's a mishmash of parts, with an original bezel and bezel insert, replacement cheapo glass and I'm guessing aftermarket parts, but the dial is original. I indulged and put a custom Orb strap on it (super thick leather, orange thread and a Panerai-style HUGE SS buckle and big retainers). The strap was on sale and I love it. This is the 2nd 6309 I've owned. The first one broke (date stopped being able to be set), so I took it apart and quickly destroyed it. On the bright side I was able to recoup most of my money back by selling it for parts! I really wanted one with an Arabic day wheel, which I ended up with in this one.

The "standard" SKX007. This is the modern version of the 6309. I got this for a great price on one of the watch sites and I really like this watch. I put an aftermarket oyster style bracelet on it. The black dial and bezel insert make it look classy and it is a great dress watch, especially with a suit.

Recently picked up an SKX009 ("Pepsi") for a great price on one of the watch sites, too. The Pepsi has the same internals and case as the 007, but it has a red/blue (faded in this case) bezel insert and a very dark blue, instead of black, dial. This is all original. I think I paid $50 or $60 for it and I added a cheap leather NATO strap to it. I'm eventually going to turn this into a project watch, but I need some skills and tools before I go that far!

This is the latest Seiko automatic I bought... a modded SOXA homage. This one is built on a Seiko "rally diver" case with replacement dial, hands and bezel insert. The glass is domed, too. I added a stainless steel bracelet that was cheap but looks pretty nice, actually. The only downside to this watch is that the case has 19mm lug width, so the bracelet feels thin to me. I could go with a 22 and cut the end link down, but that's more work than I want to put into it.

Buzzbait, your third watch photo, the round faced G-Shock, do they still make that model? I got one in 1988, after seeing a Royal Marine wearing one at the British Army Jungle school in Brunei. It still runs, the 5 year battery is going on 8 years, but it is pretty banged up. Would not mind getting a new one if they are still available. Thanks. John

This one started off as a limited edition DW-5725B from last year's Rising White series. I then dyed the resin bezel and strap using a combination of RIT dyes in order to achieve the desired color. I also swapped the negative display (gold digits on black background) with a standard DW-5600E display.

I'm sure that you can find the Rising White model (white in color) on ebay.

I have a few of these DW-5700 screwback reissues. they rock!!!!

I really like my Traser. Super light and the tritium is really nice in the dark. I like having an analog in the woods as I can use it to help in direction finding as well. I also really like my maratac watch band.

I wear an old Rolex with diamond bezel, I can't find anybody that will trade me a G-Shock for it. I changed a battery in a G-crap once, it cost me more than the stupid (plastic) watch cost new! It wasn't my watch, it belonged to an idiot, that insisted it was worn in the pool every day 24/7for years, and never leaked until I did that $7.00 battery change. To this day,I won't touch a piece of crap G-anything. That said, Seiko is the best watch on the market,G-shock is a "toy" plain and simple. I have better things to do with my time, no pun intended

nice. Where can i get a Marthon in Canada?

You can buy directly from Marathon in Canada (Marathon is a Canadian company) if you are in law enforcement or military. www.marathonwatch.com

I've had my SAR since November and love it, the hands are super bright and it's built like a tank!

i have a fossil that i wear to church or on dates with the girlfriend:)

I usually have a Bertucci A2T titanium case with OD green face and a black and silver bond Zulu 22mm strap but lately I have been wearing my new Timex Ironman solar shock, but I want a Casio G Shock GW500 but I am losing my job on account of the store closing(Sportsmans Warehouse Round Rock) so no more extra spending.

Is the entire chain shutting down or just certain stores? There was one about 10 minutes from my house and that one is closing soon :(. Best ammo prices around town so I am really bumming. But on a small upside I did pick up a Kershaw Junkyard Dog at 30% off .

This has been my everyday watch for the last year or so and while I'm happy with it, it's going to be my last auto. I find I'm more comfortable with quartz and manual movements.

I never could quite understand the watch fetish. I guess it's one of those things that you like or don't. To me a watch is supposed to tell me what time it is. I have had some pretty good watches over the years and they all crapped out on me. My job probably had something to do with.

My wife had a nice Tag Heuer. It died. She had a gold Citizen. Ditto. Now she wears a cheap Timex and it keeps on ticking.

My boss wears Rolex only, but my $5 Casio always has the right time, all the time. His $2000 Rolex doesn't. :D

We have always felt the same about cars. They are transportation, not status symbols.

Guns and knives on the other hand are important enough to own the best you can afford.:D

Multiply that by at least 2. ;)

I was thinking about 10 years ago. He gets "deals".

On one of my flights to Virginia a number of years ago two salesmen spent about 3 hours discussing the merits of their Rolex watches.

BTW: I know a guy who sells genuine Rolox watches for $35.00. :D

My current vote is battery powered, quartz, digital AND analog, at least some water resistance, and definitely night illumination.

I have two watches.

The first one is an older version of this Timex Expedition. It looks much better in person. You'd think Timex would have a better picture at their website.

I've had it since 2002, and it's indestructible.

I really love the combination of the analog face with the digital window. The analog face is large and easy to read, and there's still all the functions of an ordinary digital watch through the digital window.

I have it set so that it shows the date and day of the week in the window. This is one of my favorite features of the watch.

It also has indiglo so the whole face of the watch lights up quite brightly, and the brightness indirectly indicates how much battery life is left.

Battery life is two or three years.

My other watch is this Casio Edifice. They also have a similar round faced model, which I think looks much better.

It looks a lot nicer than the Timex, but it's not nearly as practical. The hands and digital displays are harder to see, and the hands often block the digital displays. It's also much thicker and heavier. It has a better clasp, though. It also scratches up quicker. It also doesn't light up anywhere near as brightly.

It offers slightly more features than the the Timex, but they are difficult to figure out and use.

It also has a thermometer, which can only tell you the temperature of the watch (it's fairly constant).

I don't really have a problem with batteries dying. I have a pretty good idea when it's going to happen with the Timex, and then it's good for two or three more years. There are also watches with 10 year batteries, but I don't know anything about those.

I also like a stainless steel band. It looks good and is very durable. The only downsides are that they are heavier than other bands, and may pull wrist hair.

Both of these watches should be around $50, although you can get a perfectly serviceable watch for less.

I highly recommend the Timex. It's a very good watch. Just like knives, you don't need to spend a mint to get a good one.

Just make sure you think about what features you want, need, don't want, and don't need in a watch before you make up your mind.
