Injured the second joint of my right thumb Monday a week ago. Being right handed and chores building up I'm ready to become ambidextrous. The thumb isn't as big or as blue as it was but still aches linke a $#@%*. Wearing an immobilizer when doing things.

If this whould happen to someone WTSHTF it could ba a catastrope. Now is the time to learn to use both hands equally.

Question: How many of youall are ambidextrous to the point this type of injury wouldn't matter.?

depends on what I am doing. naturally left handed so I was forced to live and do things in a right handed world. I can shoot, cut, chop, fight or a myrid of things with either hand, some better than others but good enough to get by with if necessary

The same considerations apply to any other imparement. How would you compensate with the loss of your hearing?

I'm like Briggz left handed and have had to do a lot of right handed thing in a right handed world. Golf, bat, shoot, use tools etc right handed.

i broke my hand not to long ago and being right handed of course everyhting was set up on my duty belt for a righty, well i learned real quick to draw and fire my weapon from the right with my left...i learned to do alot of things left handed...write, shoot, cut, eat, among other things.

I too am a lefty, but golf bat and such right handed. I shoot lefty but some semi auto rifles will try to burn my face off, so I have to be careful. It doesn't bother me to use the mouse with my right hand either, so I gues I'm kinda ambidex...whatever that big word is

If you need to do it 1-handed to get by, you will learn out of necessity.

I've been out of the Army since 99 with 85% loss of use in my Left Arm/Hand. I still work & function with no real issues. I have had to learn how to do my job as a nurse one-handed, modifying things as I figure them out.

I'll skip the " I can switch hands and gain a stroke" joke ;)

I have made some effort over the years to learn a little south-paw .
Simple stuff like using a hammer , paint brush ,Hand saw, eating , ect ect.
Long way to go but , at least I got a head start.
I tried writing Left handed , Could do mirror image fine , but struggled with making it readable without a mirror.

I've never been able to throw well left handed, and my left handed writing is kinda shaky. OTOH, I shoot better left handed. Otherwise, I often use whichever hand happens to be closer to what I'm doing. I sometimes forget (just for a half second) which hand is my right when I shake people's hands. Kinda embarrassing.

That type of injury wouldn't slow me down in everyday life, but would cramp my style on the weekends. heh

True story -

A NCSU basketball player went up and made a reverse layup with his non-controlling hand. Afterwards the sports announcer was talking to him about the shot and he says.

....... yea, theys didn't know I was amphibious :p

I can manage left handed , not great but OK , it takes a coouple days for me to program my brain into leftyness , and the same amount of time to go back to normalness ...
some jobs I was working left handed for a week or so just due to the positioning of the machinery we were working on , it wasnt till we would get to the next job and Id have to get used to right handedness again that Id notice having been doing everything different before .

things as two broken thumbs tho can REALLY slow a guy up ...

I'm right handed , but have more strength in my left. Had to do a strength test when I was injured last year. I was asked if I was right or left handed. I said right. Did the right hand test then the left. The guy asked me if I was sure I was right handed. I told him I was sure and why? He said I was twice as strong in my left then my right. Funny thing was it was the left that I injured. Go figure.

The human body is desinged to be right handed you lefty mutants LMAO :). But seriously i'd be up a creek I am 120% right handed.

Sorry to hear about the injury, perhaps this will help.

I am naturally left-handed (we are the only ones in our right minds skammer!) :D , but I have spent time learning to operate and use most major equip. right handed.

Can't shoot a pistol for crap that way, but long guns seem to be OK, probably because I am sorta weird, being left-handed but right eye dominant.
